Electric Fuel Pump on a Carbureted 350
I am running a rebuilt '89 chevy 350ci block, "906" vortec cylinder heads, and an aluminum intake with 750cfm Q-Jet retrofitted into a 1976 G10 Sportvan. This is the first vehicle I have ever owned without a mechanical fuel pump so I'm a little lost. I hastily bought a cheap electic fuel pump that pumped at 4psi, and it worked well, but only for about three gallons. It went out, and I replaced it with a fuel pump that can pump up to 9psi. Between 5-9psi. The guys at O'Reily's suggested it. I installed it yesterday, and my van is constantly stalling or sputtering.
My idea is to take the pump I have now, and replace it with a lower psi pump, because I'd hate to buy a $40 dollar regulator, which is almost the cost of the pump itself. Any knowledge you can throw my way on the issue would be much appreciated. Thank you. |
Re: Electric Fuel Pump on a Carbureted 350
5-9 psi seems a little much to me for a carburetor. I run a Purolator 4-5 psi unit on my truck and have had no problems. I think I paid around $60 for it. I've heard that crap in the tank would cause electric fuel pumps to go out. I would suggest a fuel filter before and after the pump..

Re: Electric Fuel Pump on a Carbureted 350
I do have an inline fuel filter before the pump, so it should be catching whatever trash might be passing through the line. Is your fuel pump available at local auto part stores. I might go pick it up if it is. I just want this resolved. Thank you for your help.

Re: Electric Fuel Pump on a Carbureted 350
Most carbs can take 7 psi of pressure before the pressure overcomes the needle and seat.
Some of the small, cheapie pumps will put out the psi but not the volume. Carter electric pumps are really good. The street versions are preset at @ 6 psi Carter fuel pumps |
