I am helping out a friend.
I am trying to help out a friend but i don't know much about 47 chevys. I have only done research on 67-72 c10's. My friend is wanting to swap out the inline six that the truck came with for a small block and was wondering what are things one needs to do to do it right. Also he wants to change his steering to power steering. Is it a similiar swap like on my 70 c10? He also was told that some people are taking s10 frame and swaping them. Is that a common swap? Any more info on that would be much appreciated. Thanks alot.

Josh, There are several ways to go. I have seen people use the stock straight axle and add a power steering box. I am not sure how good that works or what all is involved. Probably the easiest thing is to get one of the aftermarket front end kits. I did a Heidts one on my dad's truck. There are other ways also like the camaro/nova weld in, the S-10 like you are talking about and a guy on here did a Dakota front end that I think is like the Heidts that I did. A small block is a pretty straight forward swap. We got a set of weld in mounts and located the motor where I wanted it and got after it...lol. I have been following your 72 build and I don't think you will have any trouble helping your friend with this. The most common thing is the Must.II front end. I got mine though TCI. It came with the IFS, 350 motor mount, and set up for ps. Check out my build thead.

Hey Daniel, what did that must.II cost you if you don't mind sharing? Do they make motor mount adapters from straight 6 to a small block that you can buy? I believe my friend is on a limited budget. Is there a big difference between IFS and straight axel in regards to handling and performance? When swaping to a small block to you have to modify the tranny tunnel underneath the cab? I would imagine that you have to modify the driveshaft or does someone make a kit you can buy that is a complete kit? I hope that makes sence. Thanks alot Josh

Here's just one link. Many rod shops and online outfits sell them. I chose TCI because of there reputation, not price. I drove my '54 for 2 1/2 years stock. I'm told that the Must II front ends are the best thing you can do for improves ridability. I'm sure that with some research you'll find the same. Do a "search" of these "47-59" section of the forum and read up on all of the threads you have time for. I know I've learned a bunch here. P.S. Most times when you switch to a SB, you swap the trans/driveline and rear from the same donor. I used an 84 Z/28. There are plenty GM donors out there. All depends on what you want out of the project. I got tired of the high gears and RPM's on the freeway. The mild 350/700R4/10 bolt rear will get me on the freeway and let me cruise in town. |

it all boils down to your budget! have your buddy drive a s-10 because that's what it's gonna drive like if you us the s-10 frame. any m2 stuff is all aftermarket and good stuff and the price's reflect that. i know a guy with a 52 panel and has m2 with 454 going on 40,000+ miles with no problems. the 50' in the pic has 76' camaro and goes down the road fine but has camber issues due to improperly locating subframe too low and needing taller springs so tires don't rub. do your homework and good luck.
