Temperature Gauge

I took my truck out of hibernation on Tuesday and yesterday when I was stuck in traffic I noticed the temp (stock) gauge on my 72 was showing all the way to the right which means it should be overheating, but it wasn't. I also noticed it is like that when I have the engine turned off. Does anyone know what the problem may be? This gauge was working when I parked it last fall.

I bet there is a short in the wire from the sending unit to the firewall.

Or it could be the temp sending unit itself.

i agree with yukon jack on the short, to rule out the sending unit i would just unplug it and see what the gauge does. Should go all the way to cold, if it is still pegged on hot it is definatly the wire grounding out.
