Is anyone building hot straight sixes anymore?
 

I have a 1957 GMC with a 270 six and I'm really having trouble with thought of replacing it. It has alot of cubic inches, people make parts for it, it sounds pretty sweet with the right pipes, and you can bolt a 5 speed behind it with ease. I'd like to chat with some people on here that have messed with these engines and souped them up!:metal:

My dad just bought a 52 belair with a 235 and powerglide and we have been toying with the idea of dual carbs and split manifold and smithy mufflers. www.jalopyjournal.com and www.patricksantiquecars.com are also some good websites.

good luck getting it to idle with dual carbs...

I *almost* went with a single turbo'd efi 292 for my truck, but went with a ls1 instead, haha

my dad is putting a trailblazer 6 in his '56 though...

if you use the webbers from langdons idle will not be a issue. going to the webbers (they are actually 2300 pinto carbs) u will get a idle circut that the stock carbs lack. i would change to HEI also. met a guy with a 47' plymouth with 230 flathead duel carbs, HEI and it runs like a sewing machine, smooth as hell!

This is the motor I am now building for that same truck. This isn't my motor, but it is like what I am going, a 1953 Corvette motor. I recently bought a new 235 and it hit me, I sold my old one THIRTY YEARS AGO! Wow, does time fly!

Have you tried Classictrucks Magazine or the website..they are in the process of building a stove bolt now!

Just saw this on another post. I thought you might like to have a peek at it if you have not already. This is pretty kool, back in the day this was quite common, today this is going against the tide. I like the concept of using what you got. If you are interested I'll look up this sight I know of that has all kinds of old school stuff for six and eights.

Very cool. Inliners has a LOT of info, join the club for about 25 bucks and you will get a nice magazine every couple of months as well. Bunch of nice people.

I have been just getting back into the sixes so I can't offer much by way of what to do to them mechanically. But there are a ton of manifolds available (though the price is MUCH higher than when I was into sixes thirty years ago). The hot setup tranny wise is an S-10 T-5.

I'm excited to get that engine out and fixed up. It runs so smoothe and doesn't smoke at all. I don't know its history, but I'll freshen it up a little and detail it. I'm all about the details. The t-5 swap is under a thousand dollars I found. Langdons sells a rebuilt tranny with camaro gears in it for $750. then I'll need a new clutch plate. I'm lookin foward to this 5th gear.....

I have never rodded out an inline 6 before, but I am wishing I would have for my 67. I replaced the 250 with a 350 and wish I hadn't. I've never driven a hot inline before, how does the performance rank against a small block

I took those pictures at a local cruise. I don't know anything about that truck but I thought it was pretty darn nice. If I run across him again I will ask about it.
