Axle Splines

How do you know how many splines your axles have without ripping into it. I have an 81' with a 10 bolt and just scored a brand new Auburn posi for 28 spline...oh yea got it for 7500 pennies.

If it's original, it should be 28. 30-splines didn't start until the late '80s.
