what do you guys think

ok i called a guy i know that has a jukyard full of old stuff..i have delt with him in the past and i trust him..but anyway i called over there looking for a straight 6..he said he has a 250 that he just got in with and 55 chevy truck..but he said the guy rebuikt the motor, and it is all new and ready to go..said he would take 350.00 for it with every thing i need to put it in my 68.. so tommrow i go look at it and make a payment arrangments for it. for a new rebuilt motor, does this sound like a good deal..i gave 300 4 yrs ago for a low milage 283 from him.. it is garenteed to not knock or smoke..

Dont sound like to bad a price if its garanteed not to knock or smoke ,But if its the correct moter to fit in a 55 its not the right moter to fit a 68 and even if the guy gives you the parts to make it fit if its really a 55 it will be way more trouble than its worth. I could be wrong but I dont think they made a 250 till 63 or later ,at any rate the bell was diffrent before that. I had a 61 with a 235 6 cylinder and my buddy told me I could swap in a small block and I knew he had done this in his 66 .Well there was hell to pay diffrent bell, moter mount brackets clutch pedals linkage you name it ! 63 and up easy, older stuff not so.whatever year he says it is make sure it has the standard chevy bell bolt pattern like a small or big block v8. I found out the hard way on my first chevy moter job on my first chevy truck.Hope this helps some.

If it is a 250 cid 6 in good shape it is a good deal. You can tell if it is a 250 if the motor mounts are directly across from each other, the lifter side covers are about 4" high and there are 2 of them, it has a spin on oil filter, and the valve cover is held on with 7 bolts.

im not sure when they quit doing it, but some of the old 6 cyls had babbit bearings, and they werent replaceable... my friends uncle has a 53 chevy 1 1/2 ton truck that had that probleom so he had to find a diffrent motor

Chevy started using insert bearings in 54. Prior to that ... run!
