Magnetic oil pan /transmission pan drain plugs?
 

I heard today that you used to be able to buy magnetic drain plugs for the oil pan and auto trans pan.
Sounds like a great idea to me- looked at google and didn't find anything- anyone else heard about these or are they an urban legend, maybe someone having fun with me?

I'd think that most of the aftermarket trans pans w/ an oil drain would have magnetic plugs. I'm pretty sure the cheap one I got from Summit has a magnetic plug.

My 98 s10 came from the factory with one so I am sure they come on many, many vehicles..

My 3 speed tranny for the 68 came with one. I pulled it and saw that it was full of metal chunks and shavings. That's what prompted me to pop the cover and discover that the gears were shot. :cuss:

go to your local parts store or speed shop with your drain plug and they can match you up with one

i just check the filter magnet thing they have those a napa down the street i seen them the other day and i was playing with one there, they are fricken strong

I figured as so, but wanted a little more assurance.
Talking more about it today with a friend of mine, he mentioned getting a magnetic drain plug for the differential too.
It makes total sense.

Basically,it comes down to,the fact that there are microscopic particles of metal in any engine.These particles will increase wear.Anything you can do to reduce them reduces wear.The magnets will trap some of those oil borne particles thus reducing wear.This is true of any mechanical part with lubrication and even without lube.
Another area of wear is airborne particules.The air filter helps remove much of that but some enters and can get into the oil and cylinders.One other item to help reduce this wear is filtration.Filters are rated by microns,the smaller the micron rating on a filter,the smaller particles it traps.This is good up to the point where flow is restricted too much to provide proper lubrication.
