A/C in 64 Burb??
 

Hey guyz, I've been lurking around here for a while now and thought I'd finally post a question.. I just picked up a 1964 Suburban/ Carryall. It has factory A/C. the compressor, condensor, and anything else bolted to the engine or front clip is missing.. My question is.. How well did the factory A/C work??? Is it worth restoring and using?? The project is going to be a full custom Burb with airbags, overdrive trans and 348 W motor, so originality isn't and issue. I just figured if I had it, I might as well use it (if it's worth it).

JWI, I'm running the factory air conditioning in my '65. It works great. The setup is alot like the aftermarket units in that it works on the inside temp and not a pressure switch. IMO it would be worth using if you have everything from the firewall and inside. I used '71-'72 Chevy truck A/C brackets on mine, bought a condenser setup aftermarket, and the compressor manifold from Kenny's. Had the A/C lines made up locally. American Classic has a good bit of stuff for the inside unit (cables,switches,relays, etc.) Do a little bit of research and see if getting all the things you need to make the factory A/C work outweighs the cost of an aftermarket unit. I just like the way the factory A/C looks. Good luck, and post some pictures of the Burb! Kevin

65SC hit it right on the nose. I would recondition and run all the firewall-in A/C stuff, and run all new upgraded stuff on the engine side.

Fab up some custom mounts for that W motor...that thing will be super-trick !!!

I have a 65 with factory air and it works excellent. I would recommend using Old Air Products (www.oldairproducts.com)
They supply places like LMC, Classic Industries etc. Their staff is knowledgeable and they ship immediately. I think they have an on line catalog

A 348 W motor is the baby cousin of a the Chevrolet 409 engine.. they basically look the same on the outside. I'm using it more for the look than anything. they called it a W motor because of the shape of the head/ valve cover (I think, correct me if I'm wrong). I want a 409 but can't afford one so 348 it is!!!
