any suggestions?

Im looking to replace my stock granny low 4-spd with something quite a bit more performance oriented...

I want a 5 speed with the 5th gear at least 1.00 to .80...but havent had any luck, I'd like it to be a direct swap if possible. any ideas or suggestions? it seems as tho charleston isn't exactly performance oriented :/ sad it is really...so much potential on I-26 :D

thank you in advance!

Take a look at a NV4500 the OD(5th) is .75 and they are tough as woodpecker lips. Not a direct bolt in though they do sell the adapters.

I went from the SM465 to a NV3500. IT was a fairly simple job, the only thing I had to deal with was make a new hydraulic line for the clutch. The slave cylinder for the NV3500 is on the passengers side, plus the speedo pickup is magnetic (but I already had an electronic speedo).

If you go this route, read around. There are different versions of the NV3500, the later ones are supposed to be better. However mine came out of an 89 Cheyenne and has well over 200,000 miles on it. I put it in with 189000 and have never done anything to it.

Richmond 4+1 has a 1:1 ration in 5th and will bolt in place of the current trans. http://www.richmondgear.com/01fivespeed.html It also isn't cheap unless you find a used one, but comparable with the current offerings like the TKO 5 speeds.

Re: any suggestions?

If you get the "NV3500", make sure you get it out of a full-size pickup which is actually is a NV3550. not a NV3500 which is the S-series. The NV3550 has beefier components.

If you plan to really abuse it, go with the TKO or Richmond.

abuse naw....only 867 hp worth of balls being slammed to it :D

Re: any suggestions?

Anything over about 400lb/ft will destroy a NV3550 if it is abused. They are a light duty trans.

T56 6 speed ?

I think they will hold around 400HP just fine. Even then, there are strengthened versions that can be had. Remember, this is the same trans that is used in the Dodge Viper.
