Worth of 68 4x4?
 

Hey, this guy I know has a 68 half-ton 4 wheel drive, no rust. Frame has no rust, body (including rockers and corners) has no rust, and there are a couple dings in the bed and aother areas. I really would like to get my hands on it, he said it belonged to the local dealership, they drove it around until 70 or something then it was in a flood. They sold it for cheap. He said he drove it into the space where it sits. Windshield is butsted out, but I had one of those done in my 69 for a couple hundred bucks. The truck has like 50000 orig. miles on it, what do you guys think this thing should sell for? He said it has the old "ball-type" front end, I didnt get a chance to look. Is that a descent front end? Any opinions or advice would help, I think he wants at least 4 grand for it, that doesnt seem too out of range for that truck. He knows what he's got...Damn! Oh yeah, truck is a longbed too.

If it hadn't been in a flood and was in running order I'd say the price is not too far out of line depending on the condition mechanically. I take it it's not in running order? Which engine and other options does it have. I'd say it at least needs a new wiring harness. Also, does the engine turn over?

I just took a quick look at it before I left, and it had a small block in it, I think he said he parked it where it sat, so I assume the engine turns over, but I would definetely want to pull it and at least go through it with a mild rebuild. The truck itself and the interior werent damaged that I saw from the flood. I just mainly wonder if that front end he was talking about is inferior to the ones in 69 and up, are they still talkin straight axle with a tranverse leaf spring, or what? Would the front end need to be replaced if I ever wanted to turn the truck into a beast? I have not had any experience with 67 and 68's.

The front axle is a Dana 44 closed knuckle axle. Almost the same thing as 70-72, except they are Dana 44 open knuckle.

The theory was that the closed knuckle would keep crud away from the u-joint in the knuckle, but they ended up just being a collection place for mud, etc...

I have two closed knuckle axles (one on the '68 and one on the '69). Haven't had problems with either.
