crossmember choices.....
i have the choice of the following three: z the frame and section the front crossmember, take the front crossmember out of the 86 c10 parts truck and put it in mine, or save for a few months and get the infamous holy grail of them all, the dropmember from porterbuilt. what would you guys do and why? im leaning towards the dropmember due to the easy install and all the problems go out the window.

Re: crossmember choices.....
I would certainly save and get the drop member if I had the patience. As I don't, I z'd the frame. That xmember is awsome. Looks good and has correct geometry from all I have seen. Z'ing the frame as I have come to find out need a lot of work other than just the frame. The steering shaft will have to be adjusted if you go 4" I now know. I think my power brake booster is going to hit my valve covers and the tranny hump has to be raised to clear your tranny. I may have to make my own engine mounts to lower the engine for clearance.

Re: crossmember choices.....
The choise is easy! I fab, weld, design and can build some cool stuff. I have a Z'd and body dropped truck (Slow Build)that I started a few years back and when I start my 2WD Blazer it is getting one of Porters DropMembers under it. Why because it is better in every respect than what you can do in other ways. You can Z the frame and play with getting the body lined back up and getting the frame square again or slap in a DropMember. You can body drop the truck, loose head room, try and keep everything lined up, get custom made carpet, drop the bumpers, raise the bed floor all to get the rockers lower to the ground. Or slap in a DropMember. Are you starting to get the picture and this does not even cover the better handling you get from a DropMember.

Re: crossmember choices.....
I have to agree if the Porterbuilt drop member is doable on the money end of things it is just plain and simple THE WAY TO GO.
It is not that expensive when you figure all the things that it eleaviates from the equation but, I can't afford one right now either :( RJ22...:) |
