front leaf springs

This truck was lifted a long time ago it has 4inch lift blocks in the back and a bunch of stacked springs in front I would like to put actual lift springs in front but I dont know If I would need 4inch or 6inch lift springs to keep the front the same height that it is right now I dont want it any lower than the back what do you guys think I would need? http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...832_1_full.jpg

Re: front leaf springs

the tires are 40's I forgot to mention that the truck has a 3inch body lift also

Re: front leaf springs

might as well go with 6" then.

Re: front leaf springs

Yeah, 6" and a body lift is fine for 40's.

Re: front leaf springs

:agree:

The truck looks good

rcflyer1234 06-24-2007 05:58 PM

Re: front leaf springs

The only reason they are mounted so low is because michigan has a lift law and they go by bumper height and I dont think the stock bumpers would look good that low at all
Anyway does anyone else think that 6inch lift leaf springs for the front would keep the front of the truck the same height as it is now?

If your running 4" blocks in the rear.......then 4" springs in front should level it out........

That is not a fair assumption.....You already stated that it had a stack of leafs on the front, it could very well have an "add-a-leaf" on the rear. It is a common thing with 6" lift kits to keep the block height to a mimimum.

You have a good point

I don`t agree at all.Can you be more specific and state why or what you mean?I lift my own trucks and I fully intend for them to be street driven.

Back to the subject....As stated by someone who knows,6" lift in front with 3" body lift is what you need for 40s,no less. That`s your main concern.Being level with rear? Can only guess.Once lift is on front, you`ll know.I don`t think it will be lower than the rear. That`s my guess. The rear can go lower than the front as far as body clearance goes.If the rear is too high, get shorter blocks or buy 6" springs. How many leafs are on the rear, now? Is there one that has different looking ends on it from the rest? That would be an add-a-leaf.What size blocks are on it?

What`s with Michigan? You have to put lowered bumpers on you trucks(not that unusually),then we have two newbies from there in a row coming on here with strong opinions against lifted trucks on the street. At least a third one (thread starter) likes lifted trucks and 40" tires. It doesn`t matter what I like.I do what I like and let others do what they like and keep my mouth shut. It`s also a rule here that if you don`t have anything to say, move on...Just like real life.

The rear has 4inch blocks the springs appear to be stock the front springs are stacked michigan had a lift law since 1992 here is more info on it

I'm betting the too noobs are trolls or they are friends of rcflyer that came on here to give him a hard time.

Either way, post's like that are way out of place in the 4x4 area. If you don't like lifted 4x4's don't try to tell us what we like is wrong.

Re: front leaf springs

I would get a 6 in kit if it sets to high use the blocks that come with the kit to replace the ones you have if it sits like you like it then leave it a lone and keep the spair ubolt for the rear incase you ever need them for some thing else you do to the truck.

Haha, "trolls", as in folks living under the bridge, as in everyone south of the Makinac Bridge? But hey, if it will make you feel better my otherwise perfect candidate for lowering 2wd truck rolls on 32" & 33" mud slingers, and the only reason I ain't got larger ones is that there ain't no lift kits for those trucks no more so anything larger will rub like crazey. And I also made me something that ya'll don't see every day - an old Lincoln Towncar with 29" offroad truck tires, massive brush guard, and a spare wheel mounted jeep-style behind the rear bumper - I'd say that's about as offroad-ready as one can get from a limo-foundation sedan :bling2: So yeah, not all MI is weird like that.

As for why you need lift and big tires on the street - I saw once an accident on 275, happened right before me eyes, some kid with a ricemobile was passing a lifted truck of some sort and didn't judge his distance right and cut the truck off clipping the front right tire, ricer kid floored the gas took off and lost control and spun and truck climbed straight over and across the hood, like an action-movie scene :D

Re: front leaf springs

On question about lift kits - when lowering I've noticed folks try to use 2" more drop in the rear to level out their trucks, so I'd assume when lifting to level it out you need 2" more lift in the front. You already got 4" blocks in the rear, so that would make for some 6" front lift, so go with that, if truck ends up sagging in the rear you can either add a leaf there, or maybe take a leaf off the front.

Re: front leaf springs

In Ohio they are a lot tougher on paper about lifting ....bumper height. You cannot drop the bumper to meet the legal minimum. This was a huge thing years ago (late 80s/early90s) when it was enacted and starting to be enforced. There was no "grandfather" clause because of it being a saftey issue/law. Everybody had to bring them down.
In recent years, despite the fact that the law is still there, many have gone back up. I really don't know what the deal is about the lack of enforcement.
The funny thing is, if you are over 10k GVWR, there is no restriction? So with a bigger/heavier truck..........saftey is not an issue?

Quote:

Vehicle Type Front Rear
Passenger Vehicles 22 inches 22 inches
4,500 lbs. and under GVWR 24 inches 26 inches
4,501 lbs. to 7,500 lbs. GVWR 27 inches 29 inches
7,501 lbs. to 10,000 lbs. GVWR 28 inches 31 inches

(C) If the body and/or truck bed height is altered, the difference in height between the body floor and/or the truck bed floor to the top of the frame ail shall not exceed four inches. (Body Lifts)

(D) For any vehicle with bumpers or attaching components which have been modified or altered from the original manufacturers design in order to conform with the maximum bumper requirements of this rule, the bumper height shall be measured from a level surface to the bottom of the vehicle frame rail at the most forward and rearward points of the frame rail.

(E) The height restriction in this rule applies to the distance from the ground to the bottom of the frame rail under any one or more of the following conditions:

(1) A motor vehicle is not equipped with a front and rear bumper.

(2) The bumper height relative to the frame rails has been altered.

(3) A supplemental bumper has been installed or an addition to the original or replacement has been made.

Re: front leaf springs

Over 10,000 GVW,back in the`80s when the laws started, were mostly commercial vehicles (cab`n`chassis that only have a front bumper and a purpose-built body mounted. Also, how do you enforce a height law on a crop truck or all wheel drive lineman rigs, etc. These trucks sit hogh for a purpose and they can`t change that. There`s loop-hole for pickup guys and K/30 SRWs started selling to that crowd, until GM came out with IFS.Then,it all went to F350s.
When they started that law I had my Blazer with &" of lift and 37" Swampers. For a month or so everytime I saw a cop pull up I`d just say the measurement as they walked up.I believe it was 27" and I`d just say,"26 3/4" as they were opening their trunk to get the yardstick out.I had a 4"lift + body-lift.So the bumpers weren`t too high.Whenever a new vehicle law gets passed, they act like it`s the only law for awhile. Then,it doesn`t seem to matter unless they want you for something else.

Re: front leaf springs

special-k,
I understand the meaning, but if it really is such a saftey issue, why make exceptions? There have been trucks that fit in the loop-hole all along...law makers just aren't too sharp!....Oh, they think they are, but none of them live in the real world. How would they know anything about it?

I worked in a 4x4 shop back then, so I took off plenty of lift kits that I had installed.
