Gas tank year Differences, 73-81,-82-86,87
I have been flipping through the catalogs and have noticed that they list different gas tanks from 73-81, 82-86, and also 87. What is the difference in dimensions, length width, overall shape? I know they make different versions for gallon capacity, but are these tanks interchangeable? I ask this because I have the gas tank out of an 87 fuel injected truck, and a 1980 frame. I hope there is not a difference as I scored this tank for free.
I also have the 3 outlet fuel sending unit from the same tank that is in good working order, could I make this work with a carb? |
Re: Gas tank year Differences, 73-81,-82-86,87
73-81 have smaller filler necks than 82-86. 87 has a sump pan (like a little cake pan) under the sending unit to keep the fuel from sloshing away from the in-tank electric pump they used that year. The pan interferes with the float on earlier fuel senders.
The other dimensions didn't change between styles (but are different between the two sizes). |

So can you use a tank out of a 82 and put it in a 87 with efi? or do you have to switch the pumps or will it not work?

Well it looks like I am going to have to buy a different fuel tank and sending unit. Not what I wanted to hear but hopefully I will be able to sell what I have. I was thinking about putting a fuel cell in the bed, guess I have some thinking to do.

I've been talking here>>> http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=625156 about tanks that I got when I bought a 1977 C10.
New question. Do the 16 gal and the 20 gal tanks mount with the same saddle mounts? |
