Rough Running
My 72 started running rough today, I have a Pertronix unit in the dist. and just had the Eldebrock rebuilt a couple months ago and was running good, but today I barely got it back home, motors a stock 283, nothing fancy, after it cools was going to take a look at plugs and I think the hamonic balancer slipped or I got the dist. in wrong as timing was at 40 degrees, but ran fine till today, any thoughts?

Re: Rough Running
check the normal places. Dist cap, rotor button, plug wire connections( good connections) dist . hold down bolt being tight( Dist. could have moved out of position) could be carb. adjustment, fuel pump, fuel filter clog, reverse coil polarity (if wiring was accidentally reversed).you could start over again with number 1 clinder at top dead center and check pointer location on rotor button. It should be pointing at number one on the dist. cap.I would check all of these one at a time with my rookie experience.

Re: Rough Running
How many miles on the motor? I had that happen suddenly and found my timing chain jumped a few teeth on the gears.

Re: Rough Running
Well I looked at the plugs, the cap and rotor, the fuel pressure (new pump), carb (rebuilt), the voltage, the vacuum gauge says its late timing but I can't get it into the green zone and it says about 34 degrees which I know is wrong but it ran fine and still idles good, just hesitates and runs like crap, I won't even try to drive it now its so bad, it probably wont make it to shop, any thoughts.

Re: Rough Running
Well I pulled off the carb as the problems got bad after two new metering rods were installed ( the ones that drop in from above, I think thats what they are) and take it back to the rebuilder and see what he says.
