1969 GMC LWB should I or not?
 

Looking at a 1969 GMC 960 that was restored 6 years ago and driven only around 6000 miles and garaged stored. Interior was never finished and chrome not reinstalled as they were looking for nicer pieces, but the body is rust free.

The owner was wanting around $9000 but after a little talking would go no lower than $8000. I know this is less then it would cost me to redo my 1970 LWB that is optioned about the same, but it seems long boxes just don't carry a lot of value in the market.
This truck has a newer blue block 350 with a rebuild turbo 400, power steering, power drum brakes, new radiator, carb and exhaust out to back bumper. New inner and outer front fenders, rust free box sides added with new rear inners. Box and tail gate dented inside but cleaned and repainted.
Crawled under, over and around it for an hour and could find no rust or bubbles on the body. The only thing I found was one of the rear end struts to the frame has rust in the center and is badly corroded in between. Needs better tires also.
Locally daily drivers range from $2200 with rust and needing things to $5500 with older paint but OK for a few years....rust in all front inner fenders...
Any opinions????

It's what you want. Looks like all the hard work is finished for you and it does look like a sweet truck. Another few hundred and it's done. Myself, I like the longbeds, especially the GMC's. I've just about got mine completed and will have about $7500 into mine, (including buying the truck for $1600). IMO, go for it...

How much rust did the owner have to repair on the cab and how did he do it? If the rear end struts are that bad it had to have rust in other places unless it's a different cab. Certainly looks nice though.

i agree with LockDoc i would ask to see maybe (in progress pics ) or any pics that would show the truck torn down. IMO that is little high in price, for around here any ways. in indianapolis that is a 6000 7000 dollar truck on a good day........just my two cents if it was a total frame off and you didnt have to do anything but drive it , i could maybe see 8 to 9 grand

I agree. Ask to see some pics of the progress. Look it over real good from under the truck.

I'm in Saskatoon and know of a truck that has had the same owner since 1975 and you could drive it away for about what this guy is asking. Send me PM if you are interested. This truck is 72 GMC with the quivalent Cheyenne package and a 350 engine. PM me if you are interested.

Well it's been a while on this post, but I decided last year to pass on this truck. Hmmmm, guess what, it came back up forsale and now was $6500.
Yes it is now mine for a nice round sum of $5000 and after having it for a week and crawling all over it I can tell you it is a absolutely rust free truck with just minor, (well sort of), issues to take care of such as a steady bearing, one arm on the rearend to replace, has original ball joints and needs door panels and the seat recovered. Already put on a couple hundred miles on it and it seems to run great, and I'm pretty sure the 350 motor and T400 tranny are quite fresh.

It was done for 6 years and he never installed the trim? Or just never wanted to spend the money on new stuff?

Here's some pics of the truck as of this week. I did the steady bearing, 2 Ujoints, added new axle seals, new rear cover gasket, fresh diff. fluid and changed the rear seal on the tranny as soon as I got it to solve the vibration and a few drips. Going to do the front ball joints and tie rods in the next while as they are all original pieces.
Took it by the body shop that did the paint on it and was told the actual work was done in about 1998, so this truck has basically been stored away since then with only a few hundred miles put on it.

The P.O. gave the body shop a chevy tail gate and so they just filled it in. Is there a wide molding strip that says GMC on it that can go across the tail gate? I was given a bunch of moldings for the side but have not looked at them closely. I know a few of them have the typical dents and scratches.
Is the side moldings, upper and lower, availible from the aftermarket?

Got a question about door panels. First are these 1969 style doors, (know they came from 2 different trucks of similar year), and what are my options for door panels. I was given 2 metal covers with surface rust in green that probably were my originals.
Does anyone know if exact replacement seat covers are availible for the two tone seats or do I go with something different.
Any suggestions to what to do about a radio as they kind of screwed up the original local.

How do I find out what emblems should be on the truck and the glove box lid.
The model according to the SPID is a C9E10934 which means nothing to me.
Read the spec sheet on the glove box door and it doesn't say much about the GMC model codes.
Also is there a spot to get info about the option codes?

Nice truck.
You should be able to use any steel or vinyl door panels up to 71. The 72 panels were molded plastic and would take a little work to use.
Your fender emblems look like gmc 910, which may be correct for your truck. 69 was the last year canada called them that.

Already bought and am driving it daily. Got about 500 miles so far and no major problems.
Minor problems are slow wipers, center lever busted on heater control, so no fan for defrost and the fuel gauge is not reading at all. I also have a slight shimmy at 55 mph and up, so I am going to do the front end and also am told the truck has been sitting on these tires for the entire 10 years this truck has been stored so they might have a balance problem.

BUT the stereo works so cruizing is a go....LOL
