prepping parts for paint
i was just out working on some 15x8 rally rims (from an 84), and i got the bulk of the rusty nastiness off. actually, i just rubbed the sh** out of them with some brillo pads and theyve actually gone from horrific to close to presentable. so, i have a few questions about prepping for and painting.
1) is por15 typically sold locally? if so, what types of places sell it? 2) if i cant come across por15, are "other" anti-rust primers acceptable for rims that ill proabaly only run 2-3 years before getting new ones? 3) what type of paint will hold up the best. anything in particular? thanks, |

I use Rustoleum. It's always worked well for me, but I've also heard great things about POR-15. I think you have to get that stuff from a dealer, and there weren't any near me and I'm not very patient, hence the Rustoleum. I'd shoot it with some anti-rust primer and then whatever color you want w/ a rattlecan. It's cheap and it should hold up fine for the timeline you mentioned.

all the autopaint supply stores near me sell por 15 products/ por 15 rust paint is to be used on metal only so that means removing ALL the old paint// for the limited life span that you expect to use the wheels i'd think you'd be good with rustoleum if gives a good finish for not much money

perfect! i went and picked up some rustoleum primer a while ago, and sprayed them all down. so far, they actually look pretty good. i just wish i would have taken some before pics... they were horriffic!! (well, after being out in a field for 15 years... hehe)
i cant wait to get them finished and get some tires mounted, as one of my old-cracked tires just spontaneously blew a hole while sitting in the garage. |

welp, so far so good. i primed and gave alight sanding just before noon, and a bit ago i sprayed 2 coats of a metallic silver i picked up. i think ill also go with a coat of clear in a day or so, and call them done.
or, should i do the clear sooner? |

Rattlecan "aluminum" rust-control from True Value - couldn't find any moresimilar dull silver; no clear-coat. Three years & counting, still very presentable.
Rallies were truly awfull (junk yard dogs) when I started. Rotary wire brush on an electric drill, then green scuff pad, cleaned with thinner, sprayed under the shadetree, with good luck (no birds). Gotta look pretty close to see any of the old rust-pits. Hey, it's a driver, not a show-rig. |

OMG yall are NOT going to believe this!!
on the 4th, i prepped those rims, got them all primed and painted with 2 coats of metallic silver. shopped around for tires, and finally settled on some Futura's from pep boys. the buy3-get one deal buried the hook for me. anyway, i spent most of a dead day at work excited to be changing to my new rims this evening, espcially since my left front just spontaneously blew while sitting int he garage a few days ago. after all the labor to buff the rust and apply the color on those rims, i was definatly ready for the reward of re-shoeing my girl. most of the dead day that i just mentioned, i spend calculating tire measurements based on the numbers im wearing now, and what i would like to get (right now i ahve mis-matched sized). i settled in on some 275/60R15. i arrive to pepboys.. and the 275/60R15s with the white letters.. the computer says they have 4, but reality is that they have zero! the manager even told me he could have them here in the moring if i wanted to wait... but after much him-hawing back and forth over hwat size i would get instead, i finally decided to get 255/60R15s. it wasnt what i really really wanted... but i wasnt planning on going home without anything to put on my truck. they bring em, and mount em, and im on my way. when i get home and unload them.... "sssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss" i called the manager up.. "uh, about those 275s that you could have for me in the morning??" hehe, i guess ill have what i really went there for in the first place! |

i am serious as a heart attack.. but when i got home today with my 275/60R15 replacements.... i had TWO leaking tires. WTFing F???
one was a fast leak, one was slow. i mounted 3, left the fast one off, drove back down to pep boys. same problem as the 255 yesterday... there was some serial number tag stuck in the bead area, and sure enough, air was hissing right past it. they took them off the rims and peeled those tags out, and gave them a water test after airing them back up again. i posted some new pics on my site... im totally stoked at how much better my truck looks now! next up... sanding and painting!!! http://www.z71silverado.com/1971c10/ but dont forget to check out the before: http://www.z71silverado.com/1971c10/.../dsc06378.html |
