1986 GMC Sierra Engine Decoding Question
2 Attachment(s)
Hi all, new to the board, but not new to older Chevy/GMC longbeds. I had an '85 Scottsdale 2WD a couple years back.
I recently bought this '86 GMC fullsize 2WD...it has a "rebuilt 350" w/ "less than 20,000 miles", and a rebuilt TH350. It runs decent with an Edelbrock intake and 650 carb, but looking at the valve covers, this sucker is from the 70's. I'm trying to figure out just what 350 replaced the stock 305 in my truck. I know on big blocks you can use the numbers stamped on the end of the block, by the head. Where are the stampings on a 350- assuming it hasn't been decked already? Thanks in advance- :) |

Other pics.. I know how everyone loves pics...In Michigan, this is "mint" for $1350...lol....
Plans include re-doing the rusted areas, a drop kit, tonneau cover...maybe...hmm...well, not like I don't have enough projects. http://landyachts.homestead.com/index.html Thanks again. Kevin |
Re: 1986 GMC Sierra
Look on the drivers side rear of the block, behind the heads. you'll find the numbers there. You can decode them at www.mortec.com

Re: 1986 GMC Sierra
Thanks, krue. I'll look there in the morning when I go out to finish the new fuel pump install.
I knew at one time where to look, but I couldn't remember if it was in the front or the back. I'll report my findings tomorrow. (Today, lol!) Kevin |
Re: 1986 GMC Sierra
Maybe it'll be something worth keeping.

Re: 1986 GMC Sierra
Thanks for the kind words. I love these trucks, this is the cleanest/cheapest one I've found to date, so I feel I got a good deal. Compared to my last rust bucket, this one is showroom new.
It's got the dipstick on the pass side...someone told me by the looks of the fill tube it might be a van engine. Whatever the case, it does run well and has plenty of power. I can't see the numbers on the back of the block, so who knows what it is. Too close to the firewall and too much junk in the way at the moment. Installed the new tonneau cover today, (It's a LeBra brand...very nice quality), replaced the fuel pump, and ordered new pre-bent trans lines (I found out one of them has a pinhole, but they are both crusty anyways), and ordered the missing cab trim piece. While I was ordering stuff, I bought a new dual exhaust setup to replace the leaky ones on there now. Should be fun crawling around under there for a few hours... I bought replacement cab corners for it and they came today. I'm an ex-body guy by trade, so rest-assured the body will be resurrected eventually. I might be able to get away with only painting the lower half under the beltline for now if I'm lucky. I also plan on dropping it about 3" in front and 4-5" in the rear with the LMC spindle/shackle kit. Then I'm done with it. I have too many other projects for now. :o |

I'm currently looking for an OEM dealer brochure for this truck, that should help clear up the mystery. I thought it was pretty cool looking, especially if it is factory. Here's some other pics. I noticed the seat to floor bracket bolt is not factory, so this seat has probably been out before...they did a good job if it's redone though. |
