Need Tire Height Advice

I enjoy taking my truck to the strip just to see what kind of times it will run and if a half-a??ed mechanic such as myself can make it run better. I keep hearing from other guys at the stip that I need "taller tires" to help improve my times. My tires need replaced and they are 29-1/2" tall. The ones I am looking at are 31-1/2" tall. I have a 4.10 rearend so pretty much run out of rpm. IS TALLER BETTER???

if you are running out of rpm's then yes taller tires will make your truck act like it has 3:73's and give you more rrrr's at the end of the track

Your 60 foot times would drop...but like he said, if you max out before the lights, you have too much gear and need to do something. Taller tires are the cheapest way to go on this. 3.73 gears would be best most likely.

i want to get in on this tire conversation. i currently have 275/60.15 hoosiers and i am thinking of using bfs 285 70 15. has anyone used this size how will it look? how will it affect my rpm. i currently run 2900 to 3000 at 55 mph.

Mitch.....I can't tell you how they will look but those are the tires that I plan to go with in the rear and the 255/70SR15 up front.

Longhornmail is right, your 60 ft times will drop if you have no traction problems, but a taller tire with a larger footprint could actually improve traction off the line, improving 60 ft. times, if you are having traction problems. Just a thought, but I would think that if you are running out of your torque range, the taller tires would be the way to go.

what rpm's are you going through the traps at?..what is your ET. if your running out of engine, 5000 rpm, in the 1/4 in high gear you must be screamin......

I'm puttin a pretty strong motor in my truck. I'm trying to find the widest and tallest tire to maximize traction off the line. I figure the most diameter you get get, the more rubber you have to push you forward with each rotation. I have a 4.10 rear gear and a 700R4. So the tall tire should help get traction with all that gear and the should bring the RPM's down at speed.
