Hey! I think I got a pontiac motor that someone was going to throw out. I know zip about them but I do know pretty big valves and pretty small chambers when I see them, the bore is at least 4 inches if not more. When I get time I will check the casting numbers, anybody got any tips? Be glad to sell or trade it. got the crank and at least 6 pistons and rods, pan, balancer and block. email please.

Don't all the Pontiac engines have the displacement written under the motor mount pads?

My catalina has a 455 pontiac, it has a ton of torque. Pontiac engines are better designed than chevys, I think, but more expensive to redo. I think I am selling the car, if you all dont mind a shameless advertising plug.

Hey outlaw,
That will be sweet!
Is that 68 a coil rear?
How do you plan to get the power to the ground?

JKU72- YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING ME! No where wil you find an engine that was designed in the 50's and upgraded a few times to the better that is more adaptable, smaller per cubic inch, lighter and easier to work on than the small block chevy! The small block Chevy is the single engine in the world that has won more races than any other engine, ever. Not to mention cheaper to work on.

As a thought, the smallblock was also designed in the 50s.....the 265 came out in 1955. Im not positive, but I think 1955 was also the first yr for the V8 in the Poncho.......69 longhorn.

jku72 04-17-2002 11:28 AM

The pontiac engines are better, they have better efficientcy, and better torque. Both Pontiac and chevy v8's came out in 1955, and all models were merely improved versions after that.
The chevy is cheaper, thus easier to convert into high horsepower, but staight stock design, the chief rules.

Pontiacs and Olds Big Block are brutal torque monsters-way more than a standard production bb or sb chevy.I bought a 455 for my brother according to the book its 390hp and has over 500ft lbs of torque, throw on a intake, carb, headers, and he bought a crower cam fot it,should scoot his 77 Olds along well!!!Real Well fior a 17 year old, almost wish i didnt find the motor, but it was real low mile, back half of car was burnt, and guy let me take the t400 and new radiator to,lotsa good stuff!!!motor was real easy to pull, only sucked it was like 112 outside, but the use of his forklift made it nice.

imaindianoutlaw 04-17-2002 06:25 PM

Pontiac blocks 55-79

No it was not steetable

68 has coils, and I dont know what he is going to do about traction? The truck will be streetable! He is just havin fun!

At least with the coils he won't have wheel hop.
The thing should be a blast to drive!
If he takes it to the track let us know what it runs

I am sure it wont be for awhile! But I sure will be here to chat about it! His truck is crap, no doubt fall apart! lol

I guess making broad generalizations about different makes of engines is pretty goofy when you think about it. If you where to take two engines ,say, a pontiac and a chevy of the same displacement, compression ratio, cam specs, carb exhaust, valve size, etc, etc, etc, you may be able to have a fair comparison, but it is hard to do. bottom line is Chevy wins more races and powers our trucks and is lighter per cubic inch than the other engines.

Not true rob, the CAddy 500 is lighter than any iron big block, and with the same flow and everything else the same...cubic inches.
