`72 Sierra:Tailgate Band
I decided to put this n.o.s. piece on.It`s been buggin`me since I bought the truck that the tailgate needed trim.I had planned to paint the truck and do it then. Then, decided to sell. And,you know how that goes...never get what you got in.So,I hated to let this piece go with this truck.I have the other trim for it,too. Now,I need to paint the bumper metallic grey/silver.

Re: `72 Sierra:Tailgate Band
Here`s an interior shot.I never got one of those before.I always wanted to get carpet first.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...5/IMG_0074.jpg And an underhood shot. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...5/IMG_0091.jpg |
Re: `72 Sierra:Tailgate Band
Tim, you tried takin the carpet out and taking it to the coin op car wash? Hose it down with some spray nine cleaner... simple green will work if you can't find spray nine, soak it in the stuff, scrub it down good with a brush, then blast it with the high pressure hose.
You'll be amazed at how long you'll have to hose it out till the water comes out clean. Go easy with the wand in the thin parts of the rug, (heel area) it WILL cut through. |
Re: `72 Sierra:Tailgate Band
I thought about it,but this guy smoked cigars and used matches. There`s 1,000 burns in the carpet.I could clean it and dye it dark blue. But,I love that lighter blue automotive carpet.

Re: `72 Sierra:Tailgate Band
I really like that truck! I wish I had the money now I'd be talking to you.... I hate being broke!

Re: `72 Sierra:Tailgate Band
are those AR vector wheels? Very General Leeish:metal:
|
Re: `72 Sierra:Tailgate Band
Yeah,I think so.They`re retro-70ish,for sure.
|
Re: `72 Sierra:Tailgate Band
yeah, I'd be interested in taking that thing off your hands too if you weren't like 2000 miles from me. General Lee wheels and stake bed donuts (or whatever those things are) are it, man.

Re: `72 Sierra:Tailgate Band
I`m strippin`the paint off the rear bumper. It was silver under alot of white.I think silver will look better.Keeps it seperate and that`s how they came.Kinda goes with the wheels and donuts(er pretzels). If I had the spray cast I used on the cargo hooks I`d use that.

Re: `72 Sierra:Tailgate Band
Man,that white paint is like house paint...real loose.I had always planned to remove the bumper, sandblast, and powdercoat in a medium grey metallic. But,that bumper is a mass of reinforcement under there. There must be a dozen bolts and it`s all welded together in one piece, must weigh a good bit.So.lazyman`s gonna DA it down, mask it,and shoot it.After alot of sanding I see the paint is just too loose and needs to come off. So,I`m scraping all in between the "diamonds".I feel like a Chinese rice carver, sheesh!!That big white bumper has bugged me since I got the truck.I`m finally going through all this so it will look better for someone else.I`d be willing to bet the s.o.b.takes the bumper off, first thing, and scraps it.You either love or hate them.I`m a true truck lover and that bumper is a classic piece of authentic western truck doodaderia.
I`d like to get carpet on the floor to finish out the interior freshen-up and put the front leafs from my CheyenneSuper(or 4" lift)that are about 2" over stock.Right now it`s lower than stock,I believe. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...5/IMG_0104.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...5/IMG_0105.jpg |
Re: `72 Sierra:Tailgate Band
SK, Truck looks very solid. $100 in carpet will really dress up the interior.
I have the same bumper on my 4x4. It does weigh a ton! |
Re: `72 Sierra:Tailgate Band
Yeah,it makes my 3/4t a 1t,I think. In that interior picture you can see what carpet would do for this truck.
|
Re: `72 Sierra:Tailgate Band
i was hoping to see a before- after shot of the bumper... looking good,tim..
|
Re: `72 Sierra:Tailgate Band
It`s taking alot to get the after.I just need to strip the metal that bends up under the tailgate.
|
Re: `72 Sierra:Tailgate Band
My dad's 69 4x4 came with the same bumper, bought the truck new, even has the same hole for trailer connection. Super strong bumper.

Re: `72 Sierra:Tailgate Band
Tim, looking good! keep on and you may just change your mind:)

Re: `72 Sierra:Tailgate Band
I didn`t get back to scraping last night. But,I think the bumper was chromed. The metal is awefully shiney and the paint just pops off.Looking at the weld I think it was chrome.Too bad that wasn`t preserved.
Yeah Ray,If I can work through my problems before it gets sold I won`t complain. |
Re: `72 Sierra:Tailgate Band
Well,I got it stripped and sanded last night. So,I masked it off and shot primer, then Metallic Silver.I wanted a rallye wheel color, but only had what was available in town to choose from.I know I have some silvers and greys stashed somewhere. What I didn`t want was for it to look like metal, like fake chrome.I wanted it to look painted metallic grey or silver.Well,I think it`s a little too "like chrome" for me.I guess I wanted bigger metallic.I`m a bit disappointed...

Re: `72 Sierra:Tailgate Band
I was cleaning the wheels up and ran out of steel wool.I still had this wheel that looked pretty bad.Just spray on the Eagle 1 aluminum wheel etch and scuff it a bit with "00" steel wool and it gets better. Not much elbow grease involved...
Before: http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...5/IMG_0106.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...5/IMG_0107.jpg |
Re: `72 Sierra:Tailgate Band
That Eagle 1 etching spray is the shiz-nit, let me tell you. I have an '81 Citation X-11 with factory alloys, and it took the crud right off, made 'em look new.
|
Re: `72 Sierra:Tailgate Band
Yeah, isn`t it?Those wheels were what I thought were "beyond saving" when I bought them.I got bold and used scotchbrite with DeeZee cleaner and scrubbed away when they were unmounted. They cleaned up,but nowhere near what they should be.Now,after all this time and they are 95+% brought back.
This is the 5th wheel after my first attempt to bring them back... http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...5/IMG_0131.jpg After that I rubbed Mothers and/or other polishing cremes(different/better wheel)... http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...5/IMG_0106.jpg Then, after the Eagle1 etch and a light going over with "00" steel wool and rinse... http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...5/IMG_0107.jpg |
Re: `72 Sierra:Tailgate Band
A little elbow grease really paid off. Bumper looks great, tailgate looks great and I really dig those rims. A set of those would look very cool on my 69 K20 I think.
|
Re: `72 Sierra:Tailgate Band
Yeah, they would. They have a tough look to them, even though they`re more of a custom wheel.I think they are pretty strong.I had them on my Blazer, too.

Re: `72 Sierra:Tailgate Band
I painted the bezels semi-gloss black, leaving chrome around the outer flat rim...
With no bezels.I got used to this and like it better than the chrome on this truck: http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...s55/cb1b_1.jpg With them out: http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...5/IMG_0087.jpg So I painted them to keep that look: http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...5/IMG_0148.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...5/IMG_0149.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...5/IMG_0150.jpg |
