Tilt column/shift lever ?
 
My shift lever won't hold in the various gear positions. I don't even have to pull back on it to shift gears. I pulled the top end of it apart then noticed that the shift lever looks worn on the end where it rides along that notched plate inside. This is my first automatic so I'm not sure what the tip should look like. I'm pretty sure it's worn, but can someone verify this?Here's a picture:

Yes the metal should go all the way out to the tip of the shifter.

I had the same prob last wk on mine .but it was broke clear off
