64 Project in the desert
Hi to all... new to the site today... i've been reading & learning alot over the last few days. I have a 64 short step that's been sitting in the AZ desert for 12 years. Been crankin' on it for a couple months and am about to stuff a temproray motor in so I can get it mobile!!
I have a couple of questions for you... #1 is a clutch config question... the original (as i got it) was a 1965 327 w/ manual 3 speed. i've removed the 327 and am replacing with a temporary 1980 267 small block. problem is that the 267 does NOT have the tap cast in the block to receive the clutch assy bolt... (it had a TH350 on it) does anyone have a solution/vendor for this issue? #2 been reading and am thinking that my parts truck - a 1980 1/2 ton with PDB will be a bolt up for the entire front suspension sytem... is that correct? I am not sure about #1, but #2 is correct. Since you do not have the torsion bar front, you really don't need to swap the front crossmember (unless you really want to), but you can just swap the control arms, spindles, etc.

#2 is correct. Jonboy is right though, there's no need to swap the entire setup, just spindles, etc...Actually, I could be wrong, but I think you just need to swap ball joints and spindles. Someone can correct me on that if I'm wrong...
As for question #1, does that block have a space where you can drill and tap it to use the old bolt of the 327? Are you planning on keeping it 3-speed? If you plan on converting it to auto in the near future, do so right away, it's an easy conversion. Good luck with you project and welcome... |

Am planning on keeping the manual 4 a while... 4spd in the near future tho... am trying to get a decent 'before' pic up asap .... lets try this... |

Nice to see yet another Zonie on here..........I wouldnt hurry to get that going unless you got a/c with that new engine! The weather has sucked!!!!!!!

The side emblems are for a 66 c10, so you may have a 66, unless someone swap them. Nice project tho.

Thanks for the input on the front DB's guys. my wallet is breathing a bit easier :).
As for the '80 parts truck, yes it has A/C, PS, elec windows all that are planned for transplant in the 64. Protrash - where are you in Mesa? nice looking truck in your avatar - would like to see a few pix of that baby! |

if you go north on kings ranch rd to baseline and make a bunch of lefts and rights you will be on cloudview dr. i bought 3 acres there...next to golf course...

Regarding question #1....I had that problem before and I just made a bracket out of 1/4" x 1" flat bar that attached to the forward ball stud boss, went towards the rear with a hole for the new location for the ball stud and wraped around to one of the bellhousing bolts. I hope that helps |

A bit of progress...
Finally got the new clutch linkage figured out, fabbed & installed. It's not the prettiest welding job, but I think it'll hold up under the pressure. also got the engine bay cleaned up and was ready to install the temp 267 this last weekend but after 'slightly' raising the tranny for a better angle to put it together - realized the PO never had the tail of the tranny bolted down - cuz he doesn't have the correct cross member! drat! :( so now i need to locate the proper X-member... no yard within a reasonable distance has one... they just say the usual - "come on out & take a look...." Anyone know of any aftermarket mfgs that carry manual tranny X-members? |
