Gas door conversion?
 

My 78' Jimmy, like a lot of others, has the not so hidden gas cap. It even has the fake gas cap on the drivers side... people love to tell me my gas tank is on the other side of where I parked at gas stations. Although the real cap is very functional, its not very clean looking. Im sure people have converted it to the gas door type I just dont know if it would be worth it. Any suggestions/help?:crazy:

I personally wouldn't give a rat's behind what others think. If you want to change it to make it more pleasing to your eye, then go for it. You just need to get the door and section of the quarter panel from a later Blazer/Jimmy and get the fill neck and hose too.

The other thing you could do is run a cap that's smoothed out like one of the others (tv78 I think) has done. Another option is a boat style filler that mounts flush to the body. The cap threads in flush to the filler and tightens with a special key. I've thought about using one of those since there wouldn't be anything hanging out for trees to grab on tight trails.

I too dont care what other people think about my truck. To me its just an eyesore. I think the best way to go would be to find a later blazer and borrowing the gas door... maybe even from just another late chevy pickup? Thanks for the ideas.

I remember seeing a hidden filler neck stuffed in behind the passengers side taillight assembly in an old truckin magazine. Been thinkin' 'bout doin' that to my '90 model

Sorry I usally am over on the 73 - 87 truck side but seen your thread. My son on his 78 k-10 used the billet doors that you can get after market. You can see in the first pic that he had to creat the flange to hang the door open and hinge from, the other pic shows the result on the other side. I know its not a k5 but its pretty much the same area to install in.

I finally found the pics of the hidden fuel filler door behid the taillight assembly
THe truck is a 50's model with a newer model bed on it. It's been a few years since I took the pics so I can't rememberthe exact details
