Source for bed wood
Has anyone purchased bed wood from Jim Carter Truck Parts? Seems pretty inexpensive - I know you get what you pay for, but I thought they're a pretty reputable shop. And at almost 1/2 the cost of some other shops (for oak)... I thought I check here first.

Re: Source for bed wood
Oak is a poor choice for bed wood. It is tough and dimensionally stable, which is good, but it readily rots. In this applicatino, Douglas Fir would outperform Oak. It is not as hard, but hard enough, and much more rot resistant. I'm not sure where Cypress stands on hardness and dimensional stability, but it is known for being rot resistant.
Oak, I think, got a repution for longevity because of all the antique oak furniture that has survived. But remember that that furniture survived indoors. I suggest investigating boat buiding uses of wood. many boats (ships) have been planked with fir, and likewise framed with oak (since frames need to be tough and dimensionally stable), but it is also common that rotten frames have been repaired while the planking on the same boat remains sound. Not that any of this will turn out cheaper than Oak initially, but given that it outlasts oak, it will be cheaper in the long run. |

I've been happy with MAR-K bed wood products. I'm in the process of doing my 70' (see Bed Time Story my current post) and I also did my 50' using their bed wood packages. It comes packed well and the wood and strips fit like they should.
esll :) You should ask Jim Carter who manufactures their bed wood packages for them. Allot of suppliers will tell you if it is a well known company. |
