Stepside fenders on a fleetside bed?
 

I have a 1972 C30 "Dually" with a fleetside bed on it. I need to extend the fenders about 5" on either side to cover the rear wheels. I have a set of fiberglass stepside fenders that I want to cut to fit. I have seen this done before on these trucks. My question is to anyone who has done this is how do I cut them to match the profile of the fleetside bed. This is even more complicated as the profile of the bedsides change from one end to the other. Is there an easy way to do this.

I am getting ready to do the same thing...I have a 133" wheelbase so I am using a longhorn bed.

What bed did you use? How did it fit?

Use Cardboard To Make A Template Or Go To Eastwood, They Got Those Plastic Template Makers For Doing Body Work.

I am currently in the process of doing this. You can use a protractor to mark the profile of the fleetside bed onto the stepside fender. Here is a step by step description w/ pics of how to do it. Its actually very simple to do. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...126946&page=13

I had to cut the frame on mine 6" to make it fit. I used a '97 C3500 pickup rearend. I was able to use factory bed mounts off the 1/2 ton truck on the 1 ton frame. It was a lot easier than I expected it to be. I had to drill a few holes and bolted the mounts in the front, and just had to drill holes for the 4 rear bed bolts.

Never done this project myself, but I have a good bit of experience with scribing logs for log homes, I would think that the same scribes would work just as well for this (get one with the bubble on it so you know your scribe is true).

We scribed mine and it worked out really well. The only thing extra that we did that I recommend you do as well is to add onto the heels of the front and the back of the fenders so that they go down to the bottom of the fleetside box, if not they sit up about 3/4". Good luck.

Here's the project,
1972 fleetside shortbed
1969 C30 frame and running gear
74 454 W/TCI 400 transmission.

The frame has been shortened to fit the shortbed. The bed floor will be wood. I fabricated a frame to mount the wood bed to the C30 frame.

I was hoping there was some magical solution to getting the stepside fender mount on the bed.

Got out there and started on mine today. I got the pass side almost completed. I mocked them up and got them level on Chlorine buckets, and marked them with 3" piece of stell with a hole drilled for a pencil. I marked them off, and cut of the excess with a cut-off wheel. It went very smoothly, and was easier that I thought it would be. Here are pics.

I am going to take the excess part that originally bolted to the stepside bed and modify it and weld it under the fender toi bolt it back to the fleetside bed.
