restore 72 stepside

Anyone have a step by step procedure for restoring/troublshooting a 72 c10 stepside? Truck ran for awhile then started backfiring and draining the battery very quickly, 2 new batteries installed and each lasted about 2 days. how does one start a restoration one this truck?

Sounds like it needs an alternator to fix draining the battery.
