Paint scheme for a 67-68 grill.

I will be painting my grill soon and was wondering how the factory painted them when the grill was same color as body. The area in question are the 2 panels at the bottom of each oval opening that extend back in towards the radiator. They are about 2 inches wide. My grill was in white originaly and the area I am refering to was I assume a gloss black( flat now from age I assume) or was it flat black??

What have the rest of you done in this area. I thought at first about just painting them the same as body color as that is what I am doing to the grill. Would this look too bulky or wrong???
Any pictures/suggestions are most appreciated.:)

I like white. I honestly can't remember how mine were painted stock. My truck was originally all white... I think the inserts were white too???

Ah, I misread this posting...I though that you were talking about the grille itself. My Bad....
Nevermind my comments then... I have seen the grill opening backing plates as grey or white....

Now that I think about it, my '67 was originally vermillion with white inserts.

All one-color - repainted that way. Headlight bezels too:

Re: Paint scheme for a 67-68 grill.

The silver grey is an interesting touch. The white grill on yellow truck that I am re-doing in 503 light green was a black as near as I can tell. Or was it possibly the grey faded to flat black??? I have deleted the eyebrow trim and the hood trim from the 68 clip. Likewise deleted side markers. I was going to delete the hood letters also, but now I am going as close to the original 67 look as possible. If anyone out there has a 503 light green truck please check their grill back pieces for color.:)

68 shortstep,
Do you have a front view picture of that grill combo??

Don't know if it applies to all trucks, but I think most 67's used "argent" (?sp) silver on the grill inserts. 68 went to a flat or semi flat black, any 68's that I remember were black in there, thats how our 68 is.

Nothing more straight-on frontal in my photo-files.

I'll shoot one tonight & post sometime tomorrow.

Re: Paint scheme for a 67-68 grill.

I wonder how it would look if someone had these pieces chromed..? I am gonna be painting my truck jet black, with chromed grill pieces. Black inserts would look fine probably, white would look goofy. If i painted them grey, it would match the interior trim, but nothing on the exterior.
Hmmmm.
Anyone have any opinions...?

Is the inside of the red one the same gray/solver color? Can you get a picture of the inside of the red one?

Both of the red ones had the gray/silver color on the inside of the oval on the grill. When you say inside, you are talking about the inside of the grill right? Because the interiors of both the red ones had a similar color.

Re: Paint scheme for a 67-68 grill.

I'm not sure how my truck was originally painted, but here is close to how it was when I bought it. The entire grill area, bumpers, and headlight bezels were painted silver with the grill inserts themselves painted black like the truck was. I added a chrome bumper and the aluminum headlight bezels after I had it a while. I was going to carry this silver and colored inserts theme with the new color but decided with the 67 style.

Here you go.

Sorry for the nasty-dusty dirty appearance, but two-three weeks of 90 -100 degree plus days and no rain, followed by sprinkles this AM makes for yucky truck photos.

WE NEED RAIN !!!!!

The picture shows what I needed. I should have asked for the interior color. I will be painting mine red with the grey/silver inside.

By chance do you have the Interior and exterior paint codes?

Thanks for you help.

The red custom had no lable and the CST does not have any codes for the color/interior listed. Sorry I can't help.

Only pic I have right now that shows the grill of my Green truck. All green with white inserts and white trim/bezels. The short step has white paint, grey inserts and alum trim/bezels. I have a grill from a Brown '67 stuck up in the rafters but I have not looked at it for a year or so.

Re: Paint scheme for a 67-68 grill.

My '68 Stepside came in 516 (Omaha) Orange with a white face inside the chrome "eyebrow molding," grille moldings were shiny silver anodized aluminum, grille inserts were a satin black. Bowtie in grille center was a red/orange, not unlike Chevy Engine Orange. 'Chevrolet' letters on tailgate were picked out in same white as the face. I bought it in June 1973 and my recollection of it is fresh in my mind, still.
'67s differed in not having the eyebrow moldings on fenders and hood. Sometimes painted, not shiny-anodized-aluminum headlight bezels and matching painted grille moldings. No white face look. Trim paint was usually a contrasting color to the overall vehicle color.White/blue. Orange /white. Blue/silver. Red/white. Black/silver. Yellow/black. Something like that.
