What color should I paint my new truck?
 

I just got this 1976 SWB, its the truck with the faded black paint. I cant decide what color I want to eventually paint it. I really like the two tone colors, but the solid white looks killer, too. Most of the pics are from forum members, so if you would like your pic removed, let me know and I will do so. They are the best examples of the colors I am trying to choose from, and the reason I cannot decide.

First, there is the solid black. I always figured this would be the color I would paint the truck once I found one, but now I dont know.

Then, solid white. I don't know why, but I love this color on these trucks.

Of course we have two tone blue and white and two tone red and white. Then there is boatpuller's combo. I have too many attachments to post a pic of his, but we all know what it looks like. (AWESOME)

I am leaning towards the blue and white or the red and white. boatpuller's color is awesome but I think he should get to keep it to himself.

If you have trim - two tone. If the molding is removed - one solid color.

My plans for this truck is a small cowl hood, a 4/6 drop with some 16's. Everything else on the outside looking stock. Not sure if I want to go BBC or SBC, but either way its going to keep the 4 spd manual trans and 3.73 gears.

Well with mine I was thinking of going black, but after going to a car show and seeing one for sale that was all black, and then comparing to mine ( dark red with rally rims painted black ) I find black doesn't really do much for these trucks.

I would have to agree with the above comments, if you keep the trim, go 2 tone, if you remove the trim stay solid. The blue/white or the red/white are both sharp looking together.

I also noticed black doesnt do much for these trucks IMO, and thats why I am trying to find a different color combo. I most likely will go with either the two tone blue or red. There is also a lime green amd white longbed that someone has on here that looks very cool, but I think that might be a little too much for me. I am definetly keeping the trim.

Man is that red/white 79/80 one nice truck . Anyone know whos it is ? Thats one color scheme that I dont see very often on these trucks. Pick that one , run some Telstars like that one , etc . Frank

gloss black with triple clear coat, accented by rising blue fade flames from the bottom to the mid cab. then a glow in the dark neon blue pin stripe and a custom stilheto on the hood...

oh wait...thats my plan, we should make twin trux :D tis be sexy :D

yeah, the red and white one is nice. I am not sure whose truck that is, I got it off 73-87.com's readers ride section. (check it out http://www.73-87.com/readers_rides/fleetside/croftcheck.htm) The only thing I would do different is paint the top/back of the cab white and lower the rear a little more. You cant tell in that pic, but the other pics of that truck shows a large rake, maybe 4-5" difference.

the burnt orange one from sportruck.com looks nice. I definetly like the two tones better. I think I will end up going red and white, but I am still quite a ways away from getting it painted.

I assume you're going to strip it down to the cab before painting it to remove all traces of the black -- if so, that burnt orange looks cool - my truck is regular orange and white 2 tone. Of course, i graduated from OSU, so i am partial to Orange.

But going back black would be easiest because you wouldnt have to completely dismantle the truck (unless you wanted to) --- In keeping with the OSU theme, i saw an orange and black 2 tone truck a few years back that looked awesome, but have no pics. I cant think of anything else that looks even remotely good with black as a 2 tone

My orange and white OSU tribute truck --- would look killer with a set of 18" TT2's - magnesium centers -- i need to clean it up and get some better pics tho, someday

The truck is definetly not going to be an OSU tribute truck (BOOMER SOONER). I dont really think I would go for the orange and white, but I do like the burnt orange/copper colors. I plan on stripping it completely down when I repaint it, thats why its going to be a while before I can do so. This truck is going to be my daily until I can find a decent low mileage 88-98 x-cab. I thought about just painting it black for now and not have to tear everything apart, but the original paint doesn't look too shabby, so I probably wont go that route either.

:lol: So you like Texas colors then? (burnt orange) ---- just kidding. My truck being orange is really just a coincidence, but now that its football season, i get a bunch of OSU crap about it (i live in Norman)

Take a look at N2TRUX'x build log for his truck -- it might renew your faith in having a black one -- Classic Trucks magazine liked it so much it ran it as a feature a couple of years ago. Hit that thing with 3 stages of rubbing compound and polish and see what it looks like, you might like it better (unless you have already done that and that is as good as it gets)

But whatever you do with it, have fun -- looks like a nice truck

Definetly not going Burnt orange either. I hate it when something else not even related to what you are doing effects the way you decide something. Looks like I might HAVE to go crimson and cream, and that wouldnt look that bad. I really do like the bright red and white though. N2TRUX truck is very nice, and it wouldnt be too hard to get my truck prepared for that paintjob, but I really like the two tone look. Thanks for all the input so far, I know what color to NOT paint my truck.

:lol: Dude, dont sweat it, i was just giving you a little good natured ribbing. If we really tried, we could put a football tie-in to any color of the rainbow this time of year.

As nice as the first photo of your truck looks , its gonna look great no matter what color you paint it, unless you want to re-visit the 80's and early 90's and paint some "heartbeat" graphics down the side or something:lol:

I saw a crimson and cream truck running around Norman - it was a '69 . Trust me - the bright white and red looks much better

On that copper/cream colored truck, I don't know if I would go out of my way to paint a truck that color but I sure wish I could find one like that!
On my '87 (That is forrest service green) I keep going back and forth on what color it would look good as. Afraid I would paint it a color than want to change it right after it was done?
If I started with a color like that I would be able to justify to myself keeping it that color.

i personally like two tone if trim stays. If i had trim like in the 70s on my 86 it would have to go a metalic green (lightish looking not dark) and white center. Or a candy apple red with white with alot of clear coating to give it its depth. But thats me i like my candy colors i know they cost alot but many they looks so awesome.

Unfortunately I did find it and passed on the deal. I'm still kicking myself for not taking a gamble on it. It was located in New York at the time which would have added to much to the asking price.

It was/is a "really" nice truck with a unique factory color choice....:)

Do this color scheme, for some reason I've seen only one truck like that (racing squares/stripes and all) and I happen to own it :p
