48 Chevy 5 Window
Hey everyone!
I am a young guy who just bought my first truck that I am going to be building up. It is a 48 Chevy 5 window. I am really excited! Like I said, I am a really young guy so I don't know a lot and I'm hoping to learn a lot from the pros here. I am open to any advice and trust me...nothing is too simple for me to learn. I really don't even know where to start on a restoration. I was just told that what I want to do to this truck is a restomod. I am going to try to add some pics to this within the next day or so but here is some info in the meantime. The truck has been sitting for 20+ years. It still has the original paint which is surprisingly in decent shape. I think it is stock except for the 8 track player :metal: and the 327 V8 that is in it right now. So I am looking for some education on where to start. It is not a vehicle that I have to drive as I have my Jeep, but I also do not have the money to do this all really fast. I want to have it up and running as soon as possible as this is going to be a 5+ year process to restore it. I don't know what the key things that I should do before I drive it are. Thank you everyone! |

You'll find that a classic truck forum is more addicted to pictures than any, um, other type of internet site.

Re: 48 Chevy 5 Window
Welcome from So. Arizona.
The first thing I think I would do with a new truck is re build the brake system, before you start it, if it has been sitting for 20 years!!! Let us know when you have that completed!! And the photos are.................................. |
Re: 48 Chevy 5 Window
Alright already! I'm going to get the pics right now! Ya bunch of animals...

Re: 48 Chevy 5 Window
rebuild the entire brake system and inspect the steering system. worst case, the motor takes a poop, but you can still steer it off the road, and come safely to a stop.
oh yeah, post PICS! lol |

Re: 48 Chevy 5 Window
All jokes aside. You have a great foundation to start from. The Bed itself seems to be one of the best I have seen yet (from an originallity stand point).

Re: 48 Chevy 5 Window
Wow that's in great condition. You're a lucky fella.

Re: 48 Chevy 5 Window
You scored the big one!!
Where do you think you would like to start!!! Tell us where or what you want to do first. What ever you paid for it it was not enough, that one is in great shape, a lot of elbow grease and you will have a fine truck |
Re: 48 Chevy 5 Window
very nice i love the camper

Re: 48 Chevy 5 Window
To be honest, I have no idea where to start. A few people, including on this forum, have told me to do the brake system first. I dont' really have the resources to weld a front clip or anything like that. My time, money and mechanical skills are limited. I am a college student and I'm only working part time. I think I'm only going to have about $1000-1500 a month to put into it. Media blasting is probably out of the question because as far as I know you have to primer it immediately. Anyone know the cost to do that? Obviously I need to do that to the bulk of it, but I'm not sure if I can do the frame.
Alright guys, I gave you your pics...now help me out! Where do I start? My initial amount I can put into it is going to be about $2000. Thanks! EDIT: How much would that be worth? I bought it from a family member so I got a good deal...just curious how good of a deal I got! |
Re: 48 Chevy 5 Window
It looks like a really clean truck. I would start with the brakes and then just try to clean out the gas tank tune her up and see if she will fire up. Check the wiring to make sure it is all intact (no cracking or flaking of the insulation) and then I would trash the camper and cruise it around. You won't find a lot of 5 windows that have not been molested.
As far as value I am the wrong guy to ask, if it were a Task Force or Blue Chip I could guage it a little better. I am sure the AD guys will chime in. Great find at whatever you paid. I would have moved on it if I found it like that! |
