87 Chevrolet 4x4 shift problem
I am looking at 1987 Chevrolet 4x4 and it has following problem as told by owner. Does this sound serious. I have not looked at truck yet but am very interested and its not too far from me. I would like to know what possible problems this could be and if you think it would be expensive fix. I understand it would just be guess but please throw it out there so I will know what to look for. Thanks,
Ronnie I tried to get it into 2 wheel drive put trans in neutral and shifted the transfer case to 2wd (4x4 lite went off) hubs unlocked. But would not move as if still in neutral. Tried to go to 4 hi, gears clash won't go in. Goes into 4 lo and is driveable PS. This is automatic so I am guessing NP205? |
Re: 87 Chevrolet 4x4 shift problem
could be linkage it out of adjustment. Thats the easiest thing.
AS for most expensive hmm the t case and/or tranny are shot. But when i go into or out of 4 wheel drive i go nuteral then reverse then dive dont know y just have always been told to do that. IM no tranny guy some i just taking a guess. but the t case is not a np205 it cast iron. the one in that truck is alumanium and they are about 500 new i think. i dont know the number for the t case but i bet ur tranny is a 700r4 |
Re: 87 Chevrolet 4x4 shift problem
Thanks for the reply. All thoughts are welcome as this gives me more to check out. I would guess that if it still drives in 2 wheel low then may not be bad tranny and may just be transfer case?

Re: 87 Chevrolet 4x4 shift problem
If the truck is a one ton then it would be a 205 but if its anything lighter then I believe it should have came from the factory with an alunimin 208 TC.

On the swb 4x4 I just bought it is a real bear to get it to shift sometimes. I usually turn the engine off before trying to move it. |
Re: 87 Chevrolet 4x4 shift problem
Thanks Guys. It is a 1/2 ton 87 4x4 long wheel base auto truck. I guess if I do buy this it would be best to have it towed as I live around 40 miles from truck and that sure would be slow in 2 wheel drive low getting it home. Any thoughts on how to get in 2 wheel high to drive this the 40 miles. Thanks for all of yall's help,
Ronnie |
