Help Speedo to NP205 thingy

1 Attachment(s)
Does anybody know what that thing is called that is some kida of gear convert that goes from the NP205 to the speedo cable. Its an L shaped box and with female connector on one side and a male on the other. I had to replace my speedo cable and when I was removing it I noticed the screws that held that thing to gether had kinda fallen out and it was not closed all the way. I opened it up to check the inside and like an idiot I let the double sided gear in the middle fall out. I can't figure out which way to put it back in. It has more teeth on one side or the other.

Thanks -Jason

Ok I figured out its called a ratio adapter.

I had one of these a long time and just sold it last week. Had you been a week earlier, I could've helped you figure out how it goes together! Perhaps you can email the company you got that pic from and ask them.

Brad now that I've figured out what it does I guess I'll just put it together. The middle carrier gear (it's actually a double gear stacked and it ties together the input and output gear) is my problem at first glance it looks like a 1:1 gear but it's not. One side has a few more teeth. It seems to go in either way it just clicks louder when it's in one way. Also what the heck were these things lubed with? was it gear oil? Could I just pack this thing with grease?

I'm sure you could probably pack it with bearing grease and call it good.

Re: greasing the box. I would use white lithium grease.

Thanks 68 GMC. My big question now is which way soes this dumb gear go in. But I guess if I put it in th wrong way I'll know it quick enough and I can swap it.

I think that's what I would do.

I'm thinking of buying one of these once I determine what my exact ration percentage is. I've measured it with my wife going behind me on gravel road ( but no license plates yet) and at first it was off 15mph. I put a different gear in and now it's app. 5mph.

But, it may be more or less once I get it checked out correctly.

All I've figured out so far is it isn't really for just the four wheel drive it was either to make the ratio adjustment easier ..cause it was off board. Or someone changed the gear ratios so much they had to put this on the outside to change it.

 Ha I'm fixin to change the tire size too so I guess it won't matter. Alot of the threads I saw last night said a speedo shop could adjust the gears in it.

Was Your Speedo Correct Before It Fell Apart? You Can Remove It And Your Cable Will Fit Direct Into Your T Case. Mine Did Because I Looked For Daus And Couldnt Find One So I Went Streight In. My Truck Is A 3/4 Ton W/410s. Its Within 2 Mph Of My Wifes Nw Envoy

So , do I understand the cable is a plug and play without this gadget??? Just put cable in transfercase????

Sounds too easy.............

Re: Help Speedo to NP205 thingy

Thanks guys I'll try it both ways:metal: . All of those pages I found said it was for a situation where you couldn't get enough ratio change (by changing the ones in you T-case or Tranny) because you had had put some really low gears in the diffs.
