Question on cost of rebuilding Turbo 350
 

I have a Turbo 350 transmission in my '72. It's been leaking for awhile now, well a few months ago I had the front pump seal replaced. Well it didn't stop the leak, so I go and ask the guy could he fix the leak. He said I probably spun a bearing in the pump. Well I been adding transmission fluid to it for awhile still. Well a couple of days ago it don't want to move in the mornings, and now it shifts kinda slugish. I was wondering if anybody has has there 350 trans. rebuild lately, and how much did it cost? There was one for sale on the parts section a few days ago if I remember right it was $175 and was just rebuilt with a shift kit in FL

I had one rebuilt locally last november, run me 250 if I remember right. But don't expect a tranny shop to do that good though.
If you have time, as in, another car to drive, then put some feelers out in the local car guys... you may get lucky and find a guy that does this out of his house garage. People go to my tranny guy from 100 miles away on a regular basis, heck, I drove like 75 miles to have him do mine.

I was quoted last year a price of $850 from a very reputable shop to do my T350 (well T350C). I ended up spending a little more than half that for a friend to redo it for me. Mine was shot and I needed a new torque converter so that added to my parts prices. I also added a deep sump pan assembly to it also.

i just traded for a c10 that has a 383 and a th350. its the best shifting auto i,ve ever owned. this thing will bark the tires in second and drive if you got your foot in it. i was very impressed. labor to do one here in tn. goes from 100.00 to 150.00 plus parts.

Last one I had done was around $350 by a tranny guy that does them on the side. That was a couple years ago. I contacted him recently about rebuilding another , The price was around $500. Still probably about half of what a tranny shop would charge.

yeah, he's here in ohio. That price included the rebuild kit, the reman'd converter, shift kit, labor, and 2 year waranty

I bought a rebuilt one with a 3 year 36,000 mile warranty thru Autozone for $420 bucks with a core of like around $100 bucks, I still have it sitting in my garage as I sold the truck that it was going to go into.

This guy does awesome work. He did a 700r4 for me a few years ago.Funny thing is he's got this nice shop and no lift. Does it all with floor jacks.

The crazy thing is if no hard parts are damaged all you need is a kit. You can get one from from Northern and it runs about 65 bucks plus shipping complete with all bushings, clutch's, seals etc. Parts stores charge around 100 to 110 bucks for a kit.Torque converters from NAPA run about 50 bucks. If you have a drum press and tools to install the seals a 350TH is a simple transmission to rebuild. I do 350's and 400's myself. There are several good books out there on doing 350's and 400's. I avoid 700-R4's like the plauge. I've rebuilt 2 of them and did not have a lot of luck with them, they didn't last long. Probably was the TV cable adjustment more than what I did but never the less.

What is actually done when a trans is rebuilt?

Can you tell by looking at a TC if you need a new one? The reason I ask is because I have a th350 that is out of the truck, so I wouldn't be able to drive it to tell.

The clutch drums have a piston inside them that engages the clutchs. They have seals on the pistons and usually they fail and this causes the clutchs to burn up, or you have a leak somewhere and the fluid level drops which causes the oil pressure to drop. When this happens the piston can't hold the clutch's in. There are heavy springs in there working against the piston when the clutch is engaged. During a rebuild the seals are replaced as well as all clutch's and all other seals, gaskets and bushings etc. Normally a new band and a modulator is installed. As well all componets are checked out to be sure nothing is worn out and anything faulty is replaced.

To check the torque converter you need a heavy set of inside snap ring pliers that will go down into the T.C. and rotate the stator. There is a sprag in there (one way clutch). It should rotate in one direction but not the other. If the sprag has grenaded it will rotate both directions. They are not worth taking the chance of reusing unless you know the trans it came out of and was working. If the trans failed it's full of contaminated fluid that you can't get this out. It's cheap insurance to buy a rebuilt converter.

I had my Turbo 400 rebuilt last year. It only cost $300.00
