Factory vinyl top ?

 I was at the gas station filling up my 72 and this gentlemen came up to me and said I got one of these in my garage I asked what year and he said it was a 69 with a factory vinyl top, He manages the dealership next to the gas station and said he drives it to work sometimes and I should check it out.. Was a vinyl top offered on these trucks????

Wow! If it is real get some pics of it and the spid sheet if you can. I would like to see it. Must have been real rare too.

I had one years ago. I'm not sure if they were factory installed or dealer installed, but I know they were sold new on lots with them. I also have a '69 with dealer installed stainless drip rail moldings.

it wasn't actually vinal, it was basicly like undercoating sprayed on, looked just like vinal.
Dealer installed, done in black or white.

Re: Factory vinyl top ?

For all of you younger guys, vinyl tops on trucks were not common. With the proliferation of vinyl tops on everything, it was inevitable that trucks would be done. They were aftermarket. VW never offered them on Bugs, but plenty of them had one. It was a late '60's stying trick. The two-tone trim and drip rail trim would serve to finish the edge and help the trim shop with the finished look. There is no vinyl top option in my Dealer Sales Book for '69. In my opinion, they're as attractive as Porta-Walls on a Semi.

I have seen several over the years, but never admired them. At this time in my life, they're interesting comments on the times we lived. I wouldn't have one....they deteriorate and cause rust underneath the vinyl. We don't need any additional rust sources.

But it would be interesting to see it, if you get and post a picture.

that spray on vinyl was common back in the 60's if fact smokey showed up at daytona 1year and his car had a high tech spray on top and after a bit of testing nascar banned it cause it screwed up the air so bad that cars couldnt run in back of smokeys car cause the turbulance caused them to loose control

the trucks ive seen it on were just butt ugly

I do have a truck with a "spray on vinyl" top. It was dealer installed. Still wearing it original orange paint, some day the top and center will be white.

Again, not an option, a dealer installed deal, so it will never be found on a SPID or build sheet. I DO however, have an add concerning this dated 1969 for a GMC dealership.
It's real.

he was an awsome man. If you ever get a chance, read his book. It's a LOT of reading, and a lot of needles stuff between good storys, but a good read none the less.

When I was a kid my neighbor had a '69 with a vinyl top. That's the only one I've seen.

Joesjunk- Any close up pics of the top?

I remember Earl Scheibs did them way back and they look like crap...Of course, what didn't from him......

Re: Factory vinyl top ?

The spray-on stuff had a rough texture, kinda like spray-on bed liners. The closest thing to it today would be the kits to do bed liners like you can buy from WalMart, etc......in case anyone is wanting to duplicate the look. Not me.

I dont have any close up pics of it, and the truck is put away at my sisters right now. I have never liked it, but I have had the truck for 17 years and never changed it either! Heres an add for it,

I wonder if the drip rails on these trucks faired better than the "average" truck?

that's the advertisement I have too... I was thinking it was a 69, but it shows a 67/68.
