1984 camaro clip on 50 1/2 ton?
 

I have a chance to buy a 84 camaro with a recent total rebuild on the front.Has anyone done this to a 1950 1/2 ton chev? any info or links would be appreciated.

The 82 and up camaros did not use a sub-frame based suspension but rather the Macpherson strut style. Trying to retro fit such a system to a 50 would be problematic. In fact the only sub-frame that should be considered for a 48-55.1 truck is a rear steer set up from a early camaro or nova.

Having done a sub-frame modification I would add that these trucks are better suited for an IFS kit upgrade. Leave the sub-frames for the 55-59 trucks.

I gotta disagree, the camaro/ nova is 2" wider than a "G" body front clip. The 78 to 87 G body clip works much better because it retains the same width as the 47 to 55 trucks.

You can disagree if you like but the facts are the stock track width of a AD truck is 60 inches. The track width of a G-Body is nominally 58 with the pontiac being a tad wider. The track width of 1st gen camaros and novas of 68-74 vintage is also 60 inches.

The use of a G-body sub-frame is not an easy swap with the major problem being the core support/steering box interference which requires a modification to the core support to solve and also mods to the radiator mounting surface to kick the lower part of the radiator forward to clear the steering box.

I restate that the rear steer style sub-frame is the easiest GM option for the AD truck but still will have issues such as header clearance. My opinion is that an IFS kit is the best option for these trucks.

I can't speak for measurements on anybody elses truck, but mine measured 58" so thats why I used the G body clip. I will agree with you Houston on the complexity factor, was not the easiest thing to do. I also agree with the IFS kit being the best option if you can afford it.
