mirror installation

I bought a new set of mirrors (stock style), so that I can actually see behind me. (peep mirrors now) I was wondering if I was missing something. Does the mirror bolt on just by screwing the screws into the door sheetmetal? Or is there some type of backing plate that goes IN the door and then the mirror gets screwed to that? Any help is greatly appreciated:confused:

yes, there is a backing plate for the chrome sport mirrors. I was lucky, and found mine on the bottom inside of the doors. The previous owner must've took the mirrors off and let the plates fall inside.

thanks, but no luck of them falling in the door. The PO was cool enough to put little metal plugs in the 3 holes when they put on the trailer mirrors. I bought the "kit" but i guess that backing plate isn't part of it!
Thanks Premium72, that was my 49 Club Coupe F**d with the flatty, 3 and 4"drop all the way around. Wife, kid, and no garage so I had to sell it. 49 merc is in the near future.

Theres also rubber that goes between the mirrors and the door skin to seal it off.

a little trick. put double sided sticky tape on the backing plate, then position. you'll have to take the door panels off to get it into place.....
