door locks

On my 49 GMC I just noticed that there is only one outside door key lock and that its on the passenger side. how do you lock and unlock the drivers side door? I`m new to these trucks so this strikes me as odd. :dum:

Re: door locks

In that era it was very common to enter and exit on the curb side of the car or truck. They didn't put lock on the driver doors for that reason.
The fix is use a passenger door handle on the other side.

Is it not like the 55-59 p-up's passenger door where you move the inside door handle forward to lock it?

Brian ...

you know, I dont know for sure. that makes sense to me but this truck is seein life after 29 years of sitting. I`ll have to play with the inside door handle tonight and find out. It just seemed strnge that the key hole lock was on the passenger door. no way to unlock it from the outside?

Re: door locks

Locking from the inside was to push the handle in the opposite direction.

I bet thats how mine is supposed to be. I`ll be playin with that tonight when I get home. hopefully I wont have to buy a new actuator. ahhhh the good ol` days when life was simpler and you entered the ol pick `em up thru the passenger side

I'm pretty sure that's the way to lock it. My '54 is that way. Yeah, "the good 'ol days" you probably didn't have to lock your truck. My truck will have a hidden alarm when I'm finished. I wish, sometimes, I could've been born in the 40's-to learn to drive in my '54 when it was new-and hot rod some muscle cars in my mid 20's. I should be happy to own what I have I suppose. It's the next best thing.

I did a little research and prior to the mid fifties alot of roads were dirt or gravel. and to keep from getting splashed or your feet covered in mud and dirt you stepped of the side walk onto the running board and into the truck. So it make sense that the lock would be there.

I've got a 48 chevy pu, same problem. Be careful, if you push the handle forward on the passenger side, it locks out the key. If you do it on both sides and close the doors, you'll be poping a corner window out, it you have one. I speak from experience. Run a screw behind the passenge cross bar to keep from locking yourself out where your key won't help you.

thanks for the heads up. I`m glad you told me this. I`ll tap that screw in this evening.
