new rear diff cover
I just got my new stock replacement rear diff 12 bolt cover from LMC, which by the way turned out to be a genuine GM part. (wasn't expecting that) Anyway, its got a dimple for what I assume to be a place to drill a hole for a plug. Do you recommend I do this, and if so will the local parts store have what I need? I know there is the square plug on the pumpkin, so I'm not sure if I even need a plug on the cover. Any help would be appreciated.

I was just thinking to myself, on the backside of that dimple is a magnet, so maybe the dimple is there to just locate the magnet??? It late and I cant sleep...

If the plug on the pumpkin is removable then I would leave the cover as is. Mine was seized and no way was it going to come out! So I drilled a hole in my cover and used a self tapping plug. If you do have to do this do "NOT" over tighten plug as the cover is not that thick and you will strip the new self tapped hole and you will be out a cover. When finger tight give a half turn and choke up on the wrench to reduce chance of over tightening.

Put the little round magnet around the dimple. That's there to keep the magnet in place.

If you drill for a drain plug...tack weld a nut on the inside, so it won't strip and you can get it tight.
