Need an honest opinion
Hey guys I am new to the forum and have a small problem. I have a 66 SWB stepside I am restoring. When I got it the original motor was gone and was replaced with a good running yet leaky 305. I have the motor out and was planning on a quick and dirty rebuild and then later replace it with a built 383. Now heres the problem. I was just given the opportunity to buy a 327 rebuilt for $600. It will be a temp motor until the 383 is done, what would you guys recommend? thanks for the input.

Re: Need an honest opinion
If the 327 is a good running motor, and rebuilt like you say $600. is a great price. If I had a 327 in my truck I'd leave it there. Great motor. I had one in a 66' truck many years ago and loved it.

1st, welcome to the board from Bama...
2nd, I would grab the 327 if it has been rebuilt and is in good shape...That is a good engine to have, and who knows, you may like it and find other ways to spend the money the 383 was going to cost.... Chad |

I agree with these guys. I have a 327 in my 62 and I love it! It's got plenty of power and sounds great. For $600, it's a steal!

Re: Need an honest opinion
I would rather spend $600 on a rebuilt 327 then $300 on a crapy underpowered 305 anyday... :welcome2:

Re: Need an honest opinion
welcome from whidbey island washington! i would grab up the 327. its got a shorter stroke which means that it will rev faster than a 383. built just right it will out perform some of the larger displacement small block motors because it revs alot faster. btw, you wouldn't happen to be an AE would ya??

Re: Need an honest opinion

Re: Need an honest opinion
Thanks for the reply guys. I have decided to sell the 305 after a re-ring job and put up for sale cheap. I am going with the 327 and a th350 tranny. The guy I am buying the motor from is selling me both for $750. I got a steal! Well I will post pics as I progress. Thanks again.
