no spark in 47
I am having troubles with 47 chev truck, I am new at working on something this old so maybe I am doing something wrong, please help.
I am trying to get old truck started, its a straight 6 cylinder. it has a starter button on the floor; turns over strong, I checked wire coming from key to coil and it reads 6 volts,I ran a new ground wire from coil,so thats good,I put a new coil and coil wire on,but I still do not get spark. I have not been having a happy day please email me at happydayrt@yahoo.com thanks |
Re: no spark in 47
If you are getting spark out of the coil (ground to the block to check) then you need to get into the distributor... points, cap, condenser.

no;I get no spark out of coil???????????

Re: no spark in 47
Do you plan on keeping it 6 volt?(If so, check to see if there's power to the coil, I guess?) I updated mine to a 12V. What are your plans for the truck? Any pics?

Re: no spark in 47
Yes, I have 6 volts to coil when I turn the key,I turn the key on and I got juice to coil
then I push the starter button on the floor;engine turns but no spark. seems like something else needs to be done, cause starter is in no way connected to coil so it seems any time you turn the key on the coil should spark??? This is 3rd coil I have tried. HELP!!!!!! |
Re: no spark in 47
no spark at the plugs, or from the coil? if not from the coil then it sounds like it is in the wiring. if the coil sparks, then points, rotor, cap, wires, or plugs could be bad

Re: no spark in 47
once again I get no spark out of coil but it has 6 volts going to it
I put the tester on it and it reads 6 volts when I turn the key |
Re: no spark in 47
You say you ran a new ground wire from the coil? The negative terminal wire on the coil goes into the distributor housing and connects to the points. Hopefully this is how you have it hooked up. Check your points. If you connect a test light to a 6 volt source and touch the pointed end of the test light to the negative terminal of the coil and have someone try to start the engine the test light should flash (pulse). If it does not your points need replaced or contacts cleaned. If the light stays on steady while someone is trying to start it, the points are not installed correctly and are grounded.
