Ok so im really thinking of painting my truck, it has the original paint still and it has a few scratches here and there but still looks good. always thought the brown was fugly lol but dad bought it new and gave it to me in 99 so i could'nt complain about the color.... anyway give me your thoughts on paint colors, solid? two tone?

Re: give me your opinion!!!

Well it sure is a nice truck for free and a nice dad as well:metal:

But you didn't really say what colors your considering to go with so that makes it a bit tough.

If it were me id'e leave it alone and just drive the wheels of the old girl.

But if ya really want to paint it id' go with a color that will compliment the interior color.

And i think id go solid as a two tone job will cost much more.

Re: give me your opinion!!!

I'd keep it two-tone, and probabaly the same color. Anytime I see a paint job that changes the color of the vehicle, I also like to see it carried thru the whole vehicle....door jambs, under the hood, firewall, etc...if it doesn't, it just looks tacky to me. Just my opinion.

:agree:

Unless you're wanting to put a good chunk of change in it to do it right, I'd just leave it too.

I know a guy who really regrets painting his on the cheap. The old paint was just faded and, well...old. But no rust to speak of. One El cheapo paint job and 3 years later, that guy has rust starting in 2 cab corners & the tailgate. Along with some mosquitoes immortalized forever in the clear coat.:(
He will remain anonymous.:o

Re: give me your opinion!!!

Well this is a difficult one for me, my 86 I kept the original color-red, however on my 78 cs I painted the inner panel white instead of the original color called out on the paint code but I left the yellow. But beside all that I like yours the way it sits now yet this is your ride so do whatever floats your boat but just keep sending us pics.

on a similar note, the factory paint jobs are just about the best you can get IMO. these paint jobs just seem to last forever

Re: give me your opinion!!!

get after it with a 3 stage polishing system and see if it helps minimize the scratches.

The only way to re-spray it without taking it down to the frame would be to do it in the exact same colors it is in now (your firewall is brown, inside the doors is brown, metal underneath is brown, etc etc--- to change colors properly, all of this would have to be addressed)

As long as my truck looked that good I wouldn't waste time and money on painting it. Drive that puppy.

Re: give me your opinion!!!

I used to hate the two tone paint but they are really starting to grow on me. If your going to repaint I'd leave it the same, good luck

Re: give me your opinion!!!

It doesn't look bad in the pics... IMO i would do this:
-buff it out
-remove the chrome bed rails
-remove the bug shield
-remove the mudflaps
-remove the chrome rain gaurds
-replace the chrome trim on the bottom (looks dull in the pic)
-add a sport bumper

and last but not least, install a mild drop;)

Nice truck!
Anthony

I think your truck looks great the way it is.
If you do paint it I would paint it the same colors or paint the whole thing dark brown.

streetstar 12-16-2007 06:19 PM

Re: give me your opinion!!!

i'm a little biased -- thats the same color as the '84 GMC Sierra Classic long bed my dad gave me in 1989

like alot of these ideas.. more me and less dad lol..but the bed rails and bed side covers are there because there are holes from the original bed rails and they did'nt want them to fly off from the way they were mounted let me tell ya !! the rest is easy enough.. im chasing the bumper deal as we speak already got 1 of my trucks done so ... and yeah the trim is old as the truck so it's dull.and i really do want to lower it just to where you will see no gap between the tire and fender ... So i think you guys have swayed me. if i do paint it will go the back same colors just a base and clear. like my red one which after looking at it when i got it back from my cousin who does all my paint work can't beat the price lol..started most of the paint idea .. thanks a ton guys awesome replys and folks as always which is why im here..

yeah so right about that and as the wife says im anal so i would'nt ever be happy with a half a$$ job.would have to take it down to the frame if i changed color for sure!!!

WHAT ARE YOU ALL LAZY AN CRAZY??? Pull the motor and trans, explode all the trim, pull the dash pad, bed, etc. And get it painted whatever you want!!! if you were to pull it apart, degrease everything and get it ready for the body work and paint it wont cost that much more then just a stock repaint.. I just think that year truck looks good in a solid color rather then two tone.. I like the older ones with full trim two toned. Its your truck and if you got the cash and know how... I say paint it...

Re: give me your opinion!!!

I like factory when a truck looks this clean. Everything looks great dropped. Put your bumpers aside and get some sport bumpers. So far you have improved the looks of your truck (looks good now) but you have an itch for personalizing the truck and everything so far is reversable. Paint wise you can buff some of the scratches out. If this proves to be to be unsucessful you can have certain areas sanded down and blended in so you can keep 95% of the original paint. This is the way to go as if you do not have $5.000 bucks for a paint job (color changes are expensive) leave it be. Not many guys can say they have the original factory paint. With your interior color red, green or dark blue are a couple of good choices. Is your interior in good shape? If so unless you want to spend another $1,000 to $1,500 bucks and this will be you installing the interior I would leave it alone. Look at the engine bay and door jams as these areas have to be repainted if you do a color change. I would do a moly mop and leave it be. imho

esll. :mm:

PS: In the end it"s your truck, do what you want just make it look as good as it does now.

Speaking from experience...going this route will cost MUCH more than a stock re-paint and take a LOT longer too. Sure, on paper it sounds good, but once you get into it, the little stuff will nickle and dime ya...and the amount of time it takes will make you second guess yourself at times.

My opinion? Leave it alone! If you want to spend a lot of money, spend it on the family or you can paint my truck! Engine upgrade, wheels, tires drop suspension?? I wish my paint was that nice!! David

Keep the paint, follow the list provided by classic87, and then drop that sucker... :D Maybe even throw a nice set of wheels on there as well.
