How do I separate an 1157 bulb?
 

I know sounds like a weird question, but I'd to know how to separate the glass from the base... I'm going to build my own led taillights and I need the base so I can use the existing sockets...

I am pretty sure you can buy a base with two leads coming out of it, if you don't want to make your own.

u can heat the glue up that holds it to the base and it (SHOULD) come right off

They get pretty darn hot when in use so I don't think heat is the answer, unless you plan to "blow" some new glass globes:lol::devil:

I've sprayed a product called Corrosion Block in the sockets before. It usually makes the bulb come apart as well.. not intended.

i bought a set of l.e.d. 1157 bulbs. they were only $10 for 2. been in my truck for two years...

those LED bulbs completely suck compaired to an LED panel. I would NEVER use those for tail lights. They don't put out enough light to be safe, nor to be DOT certified.

Well after seeing the led panel that some other board members have created I wanted a set. And since I have some experience with electronics I made the decision to make my own. I seen how their pigtail was wired up and thought that there may be a way to separate the glass from the base without damaging the base... I guess the hammer method would work, I'll just need to be careful to not damage the base...

PS. Has anyone thought of doing an led panel for the dome light? Hadn't seen any postings regarding that idea.

Has the 1157's with up to 30 LED's seems like they ought to be bright enough.

Also have the dome lights pre-made. Also sells the base with wiring pigtails, I believe. Poke around a little, I'd say they have anything you'd ever want in an LED product.

Got to disagree with you on this one Longhorn. Have you checked the newer styles that are out? I have the 1157 bayonet LEDs on mine and are way bright and have 30 LEDs in each one. Paid $17 for the pair and no problems. Ask 70c10 about them......He was also impressed. They may not be as bright as the "higher priced spread" ones, but do light up the rear of the truck to my liking, day or night.

eh, they dont completely suck for me, seeing its hard to stuff a l.e.d. panel in an aftermarket motorcycle directional...
