Antenna stock or not?

Why does it have a spring at the bottom?

Re: Antenna stock or not?

Not. So the antenna can flex and will not break off as easily if it gets hit in a carwash, by bird, angry husband, etc..

Re: Antenna stock or not?

I dont have a pic of the stock one. Base is a little more flat, antenna screws onto the base. Yours, is probably off the shelf from Radio Shack.

That there is what ya call "Redneck Bling". CB radio antennas in the 70's had springs to keep 'em from breakin' off in high speed driving! No, really!

Re: Antenna stock or not?

the spring base ant was a common thing back then,k-mart, radio shack, sears & robuck... even TG&Y had these on the shelf by the craig and craco radios.
Your truck doesn't even look like it had a radio originally, the hole there is too small and not in the right location.

Re: Antenna stock or not?

Better remove the radio and weld up the holes.

I regret to inform you it's also probably not a stocker, but could be a dealer installed job. Stocks were screw in with a flat base. Will try to get you some pics tomorrow..

Stock antennae were 31" and non-telescopic.The spring-type were cool since delinquents liked to snap off antennae back before they started hood ornaments.

Re: Antenna stock or not?

The ones with springs work well on 4X4's if you like to take it off road. My K10 has the solid non-telescopic type and appears to be original to the truck.

Re: Antenna stock or not?

Wait a minute.....weren't the originals telescopic?

The fixed-length antennae didn't exist until the proliferation of FM broadcasts. The fixed length was determined to be 31-inches, based on the wavelength of the signal that the FM stations transmitted. The telescopic antennas were adjustable to let the listener adjust it to get a better AM signal. Back in the day, there were procedures in the owner's manuals that told you how to adjust your radio and antenna to get the best signal from the AM stations that we had. It involved setting the antenna to a shorter position, then pulling the tuning knob off of the radio, to gain access to the adjusting screw that was behind it. You would then turn that adjuster to peak-out the received signal that you was the station.

Fixed length antennas didn't come out until like '73 and later, for automotive uses.

My '70 has one with a spring as well and had wondered where it came from. Probably going to end up replacing it.

I've got a hick whip and my original telescoping antenna its longer than the hick whip

Re: Antenna stock or not?

Just for the record, my 72 cheyenne super with an am radio is an telescoping fixed (non-spring) antenna... AND I am having a devil of a time re-placing it in the cowl hole in order to tighten the locking nut, but thats for another post:chevy:....

My C10 has a telescopic antenna that appears to be stock. That thing is huge when I extend it the whole way!

Re: Antenna stock or not?

My 72 has a non telescopic with spring, it looks just like my Grandpa's 72 which he bought brand new, and the antenna was on it from factory.

Re: Antenna stock or not?

Do I need to worry about the antenna? Black and blue 67-72 do you have pics of your grandpa's 72???

Re: Antenna stock or not?

as for my '69, it had a 3 section telescopic antenna that was 100% factory. came with a push button am radio. Chevy Duty has a very nice reproduction piece.
