D70HD or Corp. 14 bolt?
I've got both, and I trying to figure out which would be better to run under my truck (strength and parts availability). Both are dually axles, the d70 is a full width and the 14 bolt is narrowed.

I personally prefer a 14 bolt. Both cheaper and easier for parts in the unlikely event of a failure. How much is the 14 bolt narrowed? That will definately make a difference to which one i would put in. Do you plan to run dual rear wheels?

14-bolt is stronger because of pinion design.....

Re: D70HD or Corp. 14 bolt?
On the 14 bolt the width from outside of tire to outside of tire is about 84" and the D70hd is about 92" outside of tire to outside of tire. Yes, I'm going to be running duals in the rear on the truck as it is a 67 car hauler. I want to swap out the Eaton rear thats under the truck originally as its hard to find parts and gears for. The 14 bolt is about the same width as the Eaton rear, so if I use the 14 bolt I wont have to modify the hauler body but if I use the D70 I'll have to make rear fender flares out of stepside rear fenders to cover the tires.

Re: D70HD or Corp. 14 bolt?
are you going to regear whatever axle you use, and add a posi or locker? that would be my deciding factor.
14 bolts are easier to regear if you are doing it yourself. Also, detroit lockers are cheap for them. You only get cheap detroits for the 70's if they have the 2 pc carrier, which it probably won't have. they are identical in strength, but I would say go with the 14 bolt just so you don't have to modify the hauler body. |

A 14 bolt dually axle is the same axle as a swd axle. The only difference is the hubs. The wheel mounting flange is moved in 2" on each side. So if you bolted the swd hubs on your dually axle the width would increase 4" total to 88".
Heres a pic of the difference. I gotta set of 2wheel drive hubs if you need a set. |
