mono leafs under the rear of my c10
I am in the process of restoring my c10 and was wondering if anyone has used mono leafs that would work with the stock shakles under the rear of our trucks for drag racing purposes? and where did you get them from?

Re: mono leafs under the rear of my c10
Why would you run a single leaf for any reason? Please explain what your trying to accomplish. Running a single leaf would promote axle wrap, that could lead to wheel hop. That's not a good thing for driving, much less drag racing/

Re: mono leafs under the rear of my c10
to lower the rear of my truck, I thought that mono leafs would help get rid of wheel hop. I am going to run a set of caltracs to eliminate wheel hop also.

Re: mono leafs under the rear of my c10
The caltracs will eliminate most if not all axle wrap but I still would not run a single leaf. A single leaf is considered unsafe by most as it puts excessive stress on the spring.
Removing all but two springs is a better option if you are taking some of the stress off of the spring with airbags. Couple that with the CalTrac bar and you might have a stable set up. |
Re: mono leafs under the rear of my c10
Calvert Racing makes a mono-split leaf. I don't know if they fit our trucks, but maybe something to look into.

Re: mono leafs under the rear of my c10
I lowered my truck by removing a few leafs. I think I have 4 in there now. And when I took it to the drag strip and finally got the tires too hook, it had TERRIBLE wheel hop and I ended up shearing off a U-joint. So the GMC has been retired from drag racing.

Re: mono leafs under the rear of my c10
I would imagine that the original poster was considering purchasing a mono leaf designed for his truck. That would be far different from stripping your stock spring pack down to one spring and a lot safer. I considered the mono leaf and determined that the expense/benefit was way out of whack. If drag racing traction is what you desire find a used coil spring set-up and swap it in.

Re: mono leafs under the rear of my c10
I did some research this weekend and found that my old leafs are shot. I talked to a guy I work with that has calvert mono's and caltracs on his nova and he loves them. Calvert racing makes a flip kit with split mono's cal-tracs and use a good set of adjustable shocks, from what I heard from my co-worker this should be a pretty stable setup.

Re: mono leafs under the rear of my c10
I have a set of Cal Tracs designed for a flipped rear, and in my conversation with them they do have a mono leaf that will work. I explained that at the time I was looking a running a Procharged SBC via a Dana 60 and the mono leaf/ Cal Tracs setup. THey told me depending on tire compound that my weak link would be the universal joints if anything and that all the axle wrap would be dealt with by the Cal tracs. Here are a couple of shots during the mock up phase.

But what your after is still doable. For me I will be put more time on the street than the strip, so compramised a bit. Drew |

So Drew...do you run a shorter spring, or is the pin relocated ?? |
Re: mono leafs under the rear of my c10
The frt spring eye bushing gets replaced with an aluminum bushing pressed in and the bracket pinches betwwen the inside and outside leaf spring mount so the leaf is still mounted in its original location but has a pivoting bracket which places pressure on top of the spring just behind the frt mount where the spring tends to wrap up.
Looking at your pictures I am guessing your still in the fab up stages judging by the pinion angle of the rear end,and no welds (or cant see) on the perches.Calvert does make a kit for vehicles with leafs on top of axles in case you dont have a flip kit type rear axle set up. What vehicle did your Dana60 come out of?? Im trying to figure out the mounting brackets and Im stumped at what it may have been factory installed in. |
Re: mono leafs under the rear of my c10
Yes this was mock-up, no welds on the brackets and about 8 degrees off on the pinion angle..
The 60 started out as a full floater ford truck rear 77 vintage I think, I had it shortened 2 inches from my stock 12bolt, and had big ford bearing ends put on. I am running 35 spline Dutchman's with a 3.73 and Power Loc. I am using 74 Lincoln rear disc brakes w/ 11in rotors and a 5on5 bolt pattern. Next to locate will be the shock mounts, then finalize it all and weld it in. |
