Just saying Hi; new truck owner.

As of today I bought a 1967 Chevy C/10 Stepside for the large amount of 200 dollars. It has a straight 6, manual everything, and 3 spd converted to floor shift. Has a few questions to start;

1. Can I use a late 70's HEI 6cyl distributer in this engine? If so what else do I have to change?

2. Is it legal to turn the exhaust out to before the rear wheels? It leaks right around the axle and i dont want to have a whole exhaust put on.

3. What the heck is my shift pattern? It didnt seem to care what gear I started in, but I cant tell which gear is first.

4. What are some catalogs that I should order (must be free)

Thanks, I'll post a picture soon

R_2
1 3
that SHOULD be the shift pattern, if it was installed correctly.

hei- yes as long as its not a computer version (believe those are late 80s)

exhaust-- i dont see why not

and last of all, welcome from KY

PushinPebbles 10-19-2002 08:29 PM

i can answer # 2 and say that as long as he exhuast exits behind the passenger area it is fine

welcome!!! to the board this is very addictive and try to stay away from the shady people like randy, crazy longhorn, and longhornmail (especially) and a few others becuase they have a few nuts missing lol j/p oh yeah watch the younger gen like me( 15) ahhh hell watch us alll we are a crazy family:bowtie: :flag: :D

Blue_71 10-19-2002 08:44 PM

3_1
2 R
if i had to guess, concidering R and 1 work off the same rod and 2 and 3 off the same rod.. would you like pics of how mine is set up? i can get one tomarow if you need it

Moloko 10-19-2002 08:48 PM

Will any auto go right in? Like proper tailshaft length etc? Im about to have a powerglide spair that im pulling out of my chevelle.

Blue_71 10-19-2002 08:58 PM

i think a short tail TH350 will, but im not sure about the powerglide... but you know they are called slushboxes for a reason ;) just kiddin, i just dont like autos for my trucks

Moloko 10-19-2002 09:26 PM

Ok well next question, I want to change the oil tomarow, how many quarts does it take? I would check the manual but there isnt even a glove box, much less a manual

Gordo 10-19-2002 10:39 PM

Welcome from Connecticut! In Ct the exhaust must extend behind cab 18" and if you register the truck as a camper it has to exit past the rear wheels. Engine oil change should take 5 qts with filter.

When you wire up your HEI ignition, you'll need to run a new power wire for the coil. Don't use the power from your old coil, it is only about 6 to 8 volts. Just runa wire from the IGN UNFUSED terminal on your fuse box, and run it to the COIL connection on your cap.
Welcome from Ohio.
Oh, and PushinPebbles, real funny...
Don't listen to PushinPebbles...he don't know what he's talking about. (heh heh heh) Just messin. ;)

Blue_71 10-19-2002 11:48 PM

run it to the bat terminal on the cap, i dont know what kind of cap you got andy but mine dont have a coil terminal ;)

Longhorn Man 10-19-2002 11:51 PM

Hey welcome to the board from the Kootenays, It seems like the shift pattern on your tranny (from Other posts) is backwards but who cares then you would be the only one that could drive thing thing anyways, REDNECK antitheft!

oleblue72 10-20-2002 12:24 AM

200 bucks. That's a great price. It will be fun fixin' it up. Make sure you ck prices and quality from who ever you order parts from. Good Luck.
I got some friends up in Pittsburg, beautiful state PA.

Welcome Aboard!:bowtie:

Welcome to the board!

Palf70Step 10-20-2002 08:53 AM

It's been a long time, but PA was real stick about modifing vehicle exhausts. I'd check with a local inspoection station before I ran it before the real wheels. Some of the others board members who are still in PA could tell you more than I can though. I know the fines were pretty stiff for violations and I wouldn't want the hassle.

Check first.

Sounds like you've got a similar truck to my 72 C/10. Its got a later model 250 six installed with the 3 on the tree behind it.
Sounds like your shift rods are crossed up. I've never tried starting off in second gear but I guess its possible .

Moloko 10-20-2002 06:43 PM

Start off in 2nd? hell i started out in 3rd and the truck didnt seem to care. It needs a tune-up bad, some fool put autolites in... oh about 20 years ago and they are still in there. I just noticed the lack of a harmonic balancer, how do I set the timing on this crazy thing? Oh, and my engine block has the number 282 or 292 on it, does that help to figure out what engine I have?

chevy2racr 10-20-2002 09:07 PM

I dunn about older autolites, but theres nothing wrong with newer ones. thats what we run in our 720HP drag car.and it's what we'll use when is 900+ next fall :D and think about it, you can buy them at wal-mart!!!:bowtie:

Moloko 10-20-2002 10:12 PM
