Help Moving a Truck?
I'm looking to purchase a new truck(I know... Pics to come soon) but need to know the best way to get it home, roughly 160 miles. Truck is in Sacramento Calif. i tried to get a trailer at the local u-haul but nothing was wide enough to move it and the wouldn't rent to me any because they said the 96 3/4 ton Chevy i was using couldn't tow it any way. So long story short I am at loss on how to get this truck with out get a shipping co to do it. I did think to get a car hauler but does any co. rent those? Well any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks ken |
Re: Help Moving a Truck?
The uhaul car transport trailer are just barely big enough. Well first what is the truck you are going to get? Your 96 3/4 ton truck is perfectlly capable of towing a car trailer. there are ways to get a rental trailer from uhaul.

Re: Help Moving a Truck?
It will fit on the trailer as long as it has normal size tires on it.
If it has big tires on it take a set of smaller ones to put on it. When you go to rent the trailer tell them you are picking up an S-10. Problem solved!!! |

Re: Help Moving a Truck?
I used to tow 70 ton tanks with them all day long.
I've towed a 70 one ton 450 miles, a 69 GMC SWB 1500 miles, and many many short local trips hauling junk to the junk yards, or hauling either of the two pickups already mentioned to the shop when dead. Perfectly safe if you aren't an idiot driver, and as long as you remember it is back there when pulling up to a stop light or off ramp. |
Re: Help Moving a Truck?
Too bad its not in Sacramento, Kentucky...heck I'd bring it to ya!!! I don't know about out there but around here self employed mechanics often have a car hauling trailer that you might be able to borrow. My brother-in-law is a transmission guy and people are always borrowing his. Sometimes they pay and sometimes they don't.

Re: Help Moving a Truck?
How about a tow dolly?
|
Re: Help Moving a Truck?
I doubt you'll find a dolly that can handle a 4X4 with big tires.

Re: Help Moving a Truck?
I towed my short wheel base on a uhaul trailer had to tell them it was a 1/2 ton and also had to back it on the trailer because the rear wheels are narrower than the front on a 4x4 the trailer had no weight on the tongue and it was a long slow trip home. If I were you I'd go to US Rents and get a big enough trailer like RawRaw67 said

Re: Help Moving a Truck?
My brother and I pulled my 69 shortbed home on a U-haul trailer and it worked fine. plus we had a F*rd 1/2 ton pulling it.We could barely tell we were pulling anything at all. (credit given to the trailer, not the F*rd:lol:  )

Re: Help Moving a Truck?
Remember that point about the S-10...I told them it was a Monte Carlo since they told me that there were no El Caminos on the list [we were towing a 70 3/4 ton as well].
If you tell them it's a 70 truck they'll refuse to release the trailer. The towed vehicle HAS to be in their database. |
Re: Help Moving a Truck?
The things you here from places like Uhaul and such just for liability reasons.
I know its not right but We have placed cars or trucks in Ryder trucks along with household stuff when moving before. Also my Dad came to my place in Tulsa one nite with his 83 Caprice 4 door and a trailer and picked up a 69 Chevy long bed and towed it to FortSmith one nite........the worker at the toll booth said" Shouldnt the one in back be pulling the one in frt??" |
