RIP old girl

Ok i know this is a truck thread but i have to give her some limelight. We all got or buddies "shop" dogs etc. Mine is a 12 yr old lab named Shila that went with me everywhere she was my partner in crime. When my son or wife refused to go with my shila would. Long story short, found out she had cancer about 2 months ago, and it creeped up fast on her. I keep hoping she would go in her sleep but being the fighter she was she wasn't going to make it that easy for me. After seeing her suffer for the past week i finally made the decision to have her put to sleep today, hardest decision i have ever had to face thus far. Man on Man i cried like a baby can't get her off my mind. She was normally right behind me where ever i went so i keep looking for her knowing shes gone. Old girl when it is my time i hope your there to lick me in the face.

sorry to hear it, I feel for ya. I have had to put down a few dogs over the years, probably one of the hardest things.
It is amazing how dogs become such a member of the family so quickly.

Here are a couple pics of my youngest, and hairiest son

Found this years ago. Hope it makes your loss a bit easier to deal with.

"THE RAINBOW BRIDGE"

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Re: RIP old girl

Just reading this made me think of Teddy my Pyrenees that died 3 years ago next month. He was fourteen at the time, and up till the last week he still did his guard duty, and kept me company every time I was working on anything. I sit here today and know I did the right thing not letting him suffer but I still miss him! I haven't tried to replace him with a puppy cause I'm sure no other pyr can ever measure up. Maybe one day I will be able to look at a puppy and not compare them to him but 3 years later I'm not there yet. My advice to you is understand that no matter what you do, you must understand that NO other dog will be like the one you lost. You may find one that looks identical but the personality will be different. If you are going to look for another dog look at a different breed. If you don't you will always be comparing the puppy to your lost friend, and they will never measure up! I know I've been there, and I'm back again.

Man, you've got me tearing up now. Really sorry to hear about your loss. My wife and I do volunteer work for the SPCA, and through that connection we became a foster home for Reggie (picture below) for 5 years. He died of leukemia 18 months ago, and I had to make the same decision you did. But it was the right thing for the dog, not for me. I've had a number of dogs, but in those 5 years he became my best buddy and would follow me everywhere with a look of "what are we doing? that's my favourite!".

I look at it this way... all the positive memories added up are worth so much more than the heartbreak at the end.

Maybe to provide some closure try hanging a new picture or donating to the SPCA or to cancer research.

The Last Battle
If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this -- the last battle -- can't be won.
You will be sad I understand,
But don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close -- we two -- these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

Sorry for your loss.... It's amazing the family qualities a dog will pickup. They become such a part of the family. She sounds and looked like a great pal... may she rest in peace.

I thought the same. She looks just like my Daisy, we lost her in 92. You never forget them, they leave such warm happy memories to look back on.
Sorry for your loss
