72 C10 sending unit

Was browsing a parts website for fuel tank sending units. They had 2 listed for the 72 P/U. For automatic and manual. Why is there a difference in fuel sending units?

Some have 3/8 tube size & some are 5/16. Some have return or vent tube.

Just curious as why a transmission would determine fuel sending unit. Must be just coincidence that it is different. My gauge reads only 1/4 tank when it is full. I am going to take it out this weekend. I think it might be a bad float.
