changing to 5 lug axles

Can just change the axles from 6 lug to 5 lug axles without changing the complete rear end?

chevy lover 10-24-2002 08:30 PM

I did without any trouble yet. I found a '72 in the local scrape yard and got the rear. Pulled the axles out and swapped them into the rear of my truck. I would make sure it is the same type of rear, ie. 12 or 10.

:gmc: :)

at www.stovebolt.com they have some info on this axle change but my advice is to go to a junkyard and match them up if there the same length and the teeth are the same then you got your answer

When you say 10 bolt or 12 bolt what are you refering to? My best guess is the cover bolts.

3.70 that is what mine is. but I'm looking to find a posi carrier for 4.11's. so if anybody has a 12 bolt carrier I can put 4.11 gears on let me know(as if anybody wants to get rid of them)

refering to the axle swap that ironbuttlcmc was asking about on his 63... the swap you did on your 69 truck leads me to believe that your 69 must of had a 6lug 70 model rearend put in it at some time because the 72 axels would of been to long for your 69 rear but the 70"s model rearend is the same lenth as the 72 you purchased at the scrapyard the 72 rearends are 62" long and the 69 should be the same as my 66 60" or 61" the 70's model rearends and the 69 rearends look just a like since they are both 6 lugs just 1 or 2 inches difference i will measure my 66 c10 and let you know for sure, you might want to measure your truck i will ask around here in ky to help ya find them 411 gears ..........i need a 62 truck door

rear end change

I changed out the complete rear end for a 1971 5 lug. I went with a 307 gear since I have been running the 250 6 cyl and 200r overdive tranny. I get great gas mileage and it has great cruising speed on the highway.
