Q:2wd box for crossover steering

What are my options for a steering gear for a dana60 w/crossover steering conversion?I`m running 12.50/37 SSRs and am not commited in the steering box dept.I`m considering how new I can go with and whether or not to go with ram-assist.I am a confessed equipment freak and don`t mind overkill,if there is such a thing in this area.I`m building from scratch and can go any way I want.I do need to consider budget, though(new to me:rolleyes:).

Didn't you pay attention on Sat. Randy had all the parts on his bench for his truck.

I went with a rebuilt Cardone unit for a 72, I would have liked to gone with the AGR Rockram setup. Very nice unit but kinda pricey!

Are you going high steer?

Re: Q:2wd box for crossover steering

Hey,thanks.Yes,I definately like the high-steer idea.I`ve tweaked enough tie rods in my life.I think I would just but a rebuilt for 72 like you did.I guess I was considering a used, which was why I wonders how new can I go.About the cost of any of this...OUCH!!Kinda slows things down for me.I think I`ll go with the GM p/s set-up,since I have that stuff, and if budget later allows....my dreams may come true.

Re: Q:2wd box for crossover steering

I'm using a 1972 2WD box, a MAD FWD crossover arm (next time i'll make my own arm), new arm hardware kit, pitman arm from a 78 or 79 ford f150, 1 ton gm center link ends, and a home made draglink. I machined the knuckle on Saturday before we got together.
I dont know when the power steering boxes went to the oring style fittings. But that would decide which box to use with your pump.

Re: Q:2wd box for crossover steering

Thanks,Oldchev.I saw that knuckle at Jims and it sure looked virgin.

About that high-steer...I`m about scratchin`right now. But,if you still have it when I can play I`ll look you up.I`d prefer helping a guy get rid of spares when I can.Plus,I`d be able to brag that I got it off the guy with one of the best truck collections I`ve ever seen.

Tim, i don't have any extra d44 knuckles. But if you need yours machined or if you need a custom drag link/center link, let me know.:)

Re: Q:2wd box for crossover steering

Actually, AGR is really bad these days. Nasty customer service and the product's gone down hill.

www.westtexasoffroad.com is generally better quality and less expensive for ram assist. They can modify or rebuild what you have, keeping costs down. They also have directions on how to port your own box on the site. Redneck Ram!

81 is the metric cut over year, they went with the o-ring hoses for boxes and pumps.

If you want the sweetest hydro assist:
http://www.pscmotorsports.com/

They used to be AGR, sold it to the current company and HATED the way AGR was being run so they opened PSC. Ask for Tom.

I run Trevor's arms and steering sets ups. www.wfoconcepts.com on Pirate4x4 he's considered one of the best systems as his exterme arms get rid of the spring over the plastic cup and eliminates death wobble. PartsMike came up with a version of Trevor's arms that use a set screw to set pre-load without the spring: http://www.partsmike.com/store/store...on=show_detail

Re: Q:2wd box for crossover steering

Yeah,Off Road Design sells PSC.Thanks for refering to Parts Mike.He slipped my mind.
Randy, this is for a Dana60.But,I may need sumptin custom before it`s all over. This truck isn`t a priority right now.I`m just gatherin`info so I know what to look out for.I guess I could use an o-ring type later box with custom hoses. It all depends on what comes my way before I tear into it.

Don't forget about www.wfoconcepts.com Trevor makes steering arms that eliminate the kingpin spring, by doing this you are permenantly removing any chance of having death wobble :metal:

Re: Q:2wd box for crossover steering

i bought a used agr rock ram setup and it blows. Not sure if cause its used or my lines have pretty tight bends in them. I gotta get new lines for sure. Way tight 90*s. And 18" wide boggers on 14" wheels dont help though.

However i did get a sweet tie rod behind the axle cross over steering setup! However its on my jeep. but i dont see why i couldnt do the same on my '71.

Re: Q:2wd box for crossover steering

The word is AGR is not so good anymore.I forget what the explaination was. But,I know they had alot of problems with leaking.I heard that got better. So,it may be old news, but guys are gun-shy now,but all I hear is "no good".

Re: Q:2wd box for crossover steering

I had no idea AGR had gone down hill so much, they use to have a great reputation in the racing commuinity.
I'll check out some of the companies listed above, it seems that some of the smaller companies that started in backyard shops are the best anymore. The high steer arms I have for sale are made by WFO and look to be very good quallity stuff.

Re: Q:2wd box for crossover steering

Any pictures of these setups? I just got my 67 4x4 frame to the blaster/powder coater and I know I need to address things like steering next. I have a Dana 44 front axle with the Huge ball and socket style ends (forget what they are called; on Toyotas too) and manual steering. I have 68 2wd with manual that isn't too hard at all to steer, but my 4x4 can't be turned unless the truck is rolling and even then it sucks. Are there any idiots guides to crossover or high steering? pictures help me a lot!

Burfield joints; that's it.

Also, I intend to be mostly street driveable (haul mulch, drywall, trailers and plow) so what are the concerns with hydro assit and centering?

The closed knuckle D44's are a different beast. Do they have a flat top on the passenger side knuckle that could be drilled and tapped for a high steer arm?

I don't have any here to look at.
